Regarded by many as the world's finest director, and renowned for his exact, formalist style, Yasujiro Ozu made his first film in 1927 and went on to direct 55 films before his death in 1963. It was only during his final years, however, that his genius as a film-maker was recognised in the West alongside such contemporaries as Buñuel, Bergman and fellow countryman Kurosawa.
Tartan Video is proud to present this newly re-mastered collection of three of Ozu's most celebrated works, which together constitute The Noriko Trilogy. Late Spring (1949) is the exquisite and moving tale of a Noriko (played by the remarkable Setsuko Hara), a young woman who sacrifices her independence to dedicate herself to her ailing father. Early Summer (1951) further explores Noriko's relationship with her family, and examines at her role as a modern woman in a traditional society. Tokyo Story (1953) is widely regarded as Ozu's masterpiece, and tells a tale of inter-generational conflict when a middle-aged couple visit their married children in the bustling metropolis of post-war Tokyo.
This collector's box set is mastered from the very best materials available and includes original trailers and in depth film notes from one UK's leading Ozu experts.
