| PRODUCTION NOTES:
Concept - Mystery that stems from the forest
While studying films in Poland, Director SONG often took a hike into the forest near the school. One day, he was so lost in his thoughts that he didn't realize night was falling. By the time he realized he had to head back home, the forest was filled with a wet darkness. Though he went there almost every day, it wasn't easy to find his way out of the forest in total darkness. As he was fighting hard to find his way out, he was filled with utmost fear, which turned into a motive for a film later. The forest is so friendly during the day, but it turns into an object of fear. "Nobody knows what could happen in this forest. Can I make it out of this forest?" The mystery of Spider Forest was born.
Set - Unique colors and a mysterious space
A great deal of the film was shot in the forest. However, various sets were also built, for each character has its own space in the film. Each set was built to portray that the image and feelings of the character in such an artistic way.
Space housing secrets - Cottage in Spider Forest
It's the most important space in the film. Set in two different time periods, the cottage has different looks, sharing similiar feelings. At present, it's CHOI Jong-phil's cottage that gives off a bit of an animal and decadent sense. In the 80s, it was this girl's house that was rich but vague. It was a relatively difficult to build this house in the middle of the forest under such a tight schedule. Yet, it fit well with the forest's beautiful, but dismal atmosphere and served as the most important space in the film where all the important events take place.
Special Makeup - The most realistic dead body and wounds
In the film, one of the things that will surely catch your attention is the dead body of CHOI Jong-phil. To show the brutality, the body had to be made as realistically as possible. A body slashed over 30 times by a sickle! The expression on his face while being murdered, and the decayed body due to being neglected for too long! For these effects, JO Sung-ha who played the character had to spend a whole day in a plaster and silicon mold. Also the main character, KANG Min, undergoes brain surgery. The crew learned from specialists in medicine that this kind of brain surgery leaves a question-mark-like scar, which also coincided with the mysterious image of the film. His half-shaved head over which a question-mark-like scar is left, and the blood gushing out as a sign of pain when he tries to rememberˇ¦ this special makeup gave the actor the image that he was never known for.
Computer Graphics - Birth of spiders
Are they real spiders? Being the motive of the film, many spiders of various sizes and shapes appear. It was the biggest challenge for the crew to make them as real as possible. At first, they thought of using actual spiders, but before long they realized that was out of the question. So they turned to computer graphics. A giant spider that KANG Min runs into in the editing room, a long-legged spider that bites him in the neck, and tiny spiders crowding the mouth of a dead bodyˇ¦ all these spiders created by a CG team of REC Studio were more than realistic |
