ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
BEYOND THE LAW, an example of a polished Lee Van Cleef performance, focuses less on the violence essential to the Spaghetti Western and more on the development of the main character. The story revolves around a bandit named Cudlip (Van Cleef), who, with two buddies, steals a payroll on its way to a mine. After the theft, Ben Novak (Antonio Sabato) and the town sheriff take a replacement payroll and are again robbed by a vicious gang. The sheriff is wounded and Cudlip, finding that he enjoys living in the town, takes the sheriff's job. Over the course of the film the character transforms from buffoon to tight-lipped hero and although the script is careful to provide motivation, Van Cleef's performance seamlessly clarifies the transformation.

Giorgio Stegani had only one Spaghetti Western, ADIOS GRINGO, to his credit when he made BEYOND THE LAW and his work in other genres that did not rely on violence accounts for the subdued violence in this film. Fernando DiLeo, who penned many Spaghetti Western screenplays including JOHNNY YUMA (available from Wild East) and Duccio Tessari's RINGO films, knew how to develop characters and BEYOND THE LAW is probably the best example of that kind of writing.
