An upsetting and disturbing betrayal of the forgotten holocaust, AKA The Nanking Massacre. This film portrays the Japanese as vicious murderers of the Chinese during the invasion of Nanking. The film goes way beyond your standard approach of filmmaking and breaks realism barriers with shocking portrayals of actual war crimes being committed with actual archival footage to back up most of the scenes. The film is good at portraying emotions from the characters, and some very disturbing nauseating scenes that may upset or make some people sick to the stomach. The film is tarnished by some small annoyances like blending in subtitles in certain parts, and abrupt subtitles, but the film is still viewable.

I warn viewers now that this film is extremely graphic and over the top. One of my complaints about the film is I wish it showed more Chinese fighting back, but it's all about Japanese domination, cruelty, hatred, violence, and especially death.

Those that don't like upsetting films should pass. Those that enjoy the realism and events of history regardless of brutality should check into this frightening film.

The Nanking Massacre is a historical event also known as "the rape of Nanking", in which the Japanese army invaded the city of Nanking, which was China's capital at the time. Over the course of six weeks, 100,000 - 200,000 Chinese citizens (including men, women, and children) were murdered, 20,000 cases of sexual assault were accounted for, and an unknown amount of property damage was committed. The horrors of the massacre are unbelievable. To add to it, the Japanese government has never fully admitted to the atrocities that they committed during this time period. (For a further explanation of the happenings of the massacre there is a link at the bottom of the article, that gives a more detailed description of the happenings.)

Now that the history is out of the way, onto the actual review of the film. Considering the subject matter of the Nanking massacre, it's difficult to believe that a filmmaker would want to tackle it. But T. F. Mou not only tackles it, he shows it in a realistic manner, and shows it respectfully, mixing faked footage (the movie itself) and authentic video/pictures of the massacre. This and the addition of facts placed on the screen throughout the film (beginning, end, and during the film) make the viewer feel that T. F. Mou didn't go out to make a viscous film to get butts in seats, but wanted to actually educate the viewer about the Nanking massacre. This I have to tip my hat to.

With the film being so moving, I have to highly recommend this film.

Whoa! Those Japanese could be pretty horrible during war times--a reminder that some of the ultra-violence that seems amusing in films isn't so much fun in real life. Regardless, a very well made flick intercutting actual historical footage with dramatic recreations of the atrocities. Some of the "extra" material was also very illuminting. Overall highly recommended.

I can't say this was a great movie. It was informative in a historical context and yet saddening to see what the human animal is capable of.

Brutal and real, this is what I loved about this movie. Very real and graphic, depicting all the horrors done in the massacre.

Relatively low budget, and fairly unskilled actors with lots of the typical east-Asian facial mimic in their acting. But nevertheless a very important film that deals with the single most gruesome massacre committed during the second world war. The Japanese have, successfully, denied its existence despite the overwhelming photographic evidence the Japanese troops themselves provided. Buy this film for its historical importance. Remember Nanking....
