DVD NOTE: Celestial hardly fails when it comes to their re-mastered Shaw Brothers DVDs. However, their release of "The Chinese Boxer" is seriously fucked up. During some very crucial parts of the film, the original soundtrack score was omitted for whatever reason. In turn, Celestial worked in new synthesized music and it sounds downright terrible. It's very noticable and very annoying. I wouldn't be surprised if some no-talent schmuck was hired to orchestrate the new synth music using an old Casio keyboard.

Don't worry, though. It will, in no way, ruin your overall appreciation for this milestone kung fu classic.

With Celestial Pictures new Region 3 release of the film we get to see the film in its original uncut, restored state. Wow, is this film beautiful looking. It impressed me so much that from now on I plan on only purchasing the Celestial Pictures releases of the Shaw Brothers Studios classic wuxia films. Why would I go back to buying those lame, faded DVDs from other kung fu DVD distributors?

REGION: 3

STUDIO: Celestial Pictures HK

FILM SPECS: Presented in (2:35:1) Anamorphic Widescreen. Color. The film transfer is beautifully done. This film looks like it was shot yesterday. I cant say how great this film looks. Its just perfect.

EXTRAS: Five different film trailers, Photo Gallery, Behind-the Scenes Notes, Movie Stills, Original Poster Art; Production Notes, Profiles of Lo Lieh, Wong Ping, Chiu Hung, Cheng Lui, & Wang Yu. Subtitles: English, Chinese.

AUDIO: Dolby Digital 5.1. Mandarin (DD). The sound quality on this DVD matches up to the pristine film restoration done by the good people at Celestial Pictures. Incredible music stings and sound FX compliment the incredible direction and martial arts choreography by Jimmy Wang Yu. I noticed that some of the films score was redone, but this didnt distract me at all. You can hear background noises perfectly. For example: Listen to the scene in the casino where The Chinese Boxer taps the coins in his hand and the lantern swinging/squeaking.

THE FINAL WORD: ...Do not wait to buy this from an American distributor like Miramax. These films should be seen uncut and in their true original glory. In my opinion all kung fu fans should purchase these restored Shaw Brothers classics in the new Region 3 versions. The quality and care brought to these beautiful Asian films is just unmatched. Celestial Pictures: WE SALUTE YOU!!!
