I give this one four stars for the beautiful sets, outlandish action, and wonderful characters. This Chor Yuen-directed feature based on a Ku Lung novel stars Liu Yung in the lead. Many may know Liu Yung as a regular actor in the late great Bruce Lee's movies. Along with the lovely Huang Hsing-hsiu, and Sun Chien our hero tries to save his poisoned brother portrayed by Yueh Hua. Yueh Hua is the head of the Water Clan which is in charge of the other Five Element Clans and leader of the Martial Arts World. Leadership is determined every five years at a tournament with the five clan chiefs pitted against each other. The mystery Liu Yung must solve is who poisoned his brother and why before the tournament begins. This movie is not for everyone, its one of those wire-fu fantasies with super powers, but it is entertaining.

Great cast. A bit hard to rate. It's a mix of martial arts with special powers (Icy Palm, Fire something...). Sometimes you think you're watching the Fantastic Four! The storyline is alright. The fights, when they don't ridiculously fly, are very good. Many absurd scenes. Great sets as usual by Shaws. Overall the movie is entertaining. As a movie, I'm giving it a weak 3.5 stars for entertainment value. The fights (removing the absurdities) would be 4.5 stars for the quality. If I would deduct my usual points, it would be 2.5 stars at best! That's why I say it's hard to rate. Overall, I must admit that I had fun watching it. But you gotta' have an open mind because the flying is way too much (more than the average for a Shaws movie), and for the special powers--well--either you'll love them or find them totally ridiculous. For me, it was the latter.
