ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
In this gritty film noir, shot on location in a night-time New York of run-down lodging houses and cheap cafés, Dana Andrews stars as Mark Dixon, a brutally over-zealous cop trying to escape the stigma of his father's criminal past. After accidentally killing a possible murder suspect, Dixon plunges deeper into guilt when he falls in love with the dead man's wife (Gene Tierney) and her father becomes a suspect for the killing. Redemption is eventually found; but at a high price.
