Amazing gothic style horror movie from Shaw Brothers. It reminded me some of "Hex" (it really helps that both the director Gwai Chi Hung and the main star Chen Szu-Chia are both here as well), but it reminded me more of the self-conscious horror movies from the early '70s in the U.S. like Count Yorga, Vampire and the Night Stalker (the movie pilot to the TV series Kolchak the Nightstalker) where the supernatural world and the real world slam heads. The movie really belongs to Chen Szu-Chia who is wonderful as the vulnerable manicurist turned haunted manicurist. It has a gothic movie pace to it so those more familiar with modern hyperactive horror movies will find this slow; but that is the charm of gothic horror: the slow burn that keeps you on edge making you dread the very next second. |
