| Nothing's as it seems in 'Into The Mirror'.
Department Store, Dreampia, is re-opening after having closed down due to a mysterious fire. Meanwhile, a series of serial murders are occurring just days before the grand re-opening; the victims being employees. Is someone trying to sabotage the corporation, or is something more. . . unexplainable lurking within?
After a traumatic incident, detective Wu Young-min quits the police force to work for his uncle as head security of Dreampia. The characters in 'Into The Mirror' have their own distinct personality and obstacles to overcome, and at a certain point there is a moving experience/moment for each in which the viewer learns a little more than what's skin deep.
The story follows Wu Young-min as he tries to solve the case. All the while struggling internally; a haunting past, guilt, loss, and directionless life. To make matters worse, an old acquaintance, Ha Hyun-su, is in charge of the police investigation, and won't let Young-min forget it. What appears on the outside to be nothing more than suicides taking place, Young-min knows to be much more. However, the detectives must work together in order to uncover the truth.
'Into The Mirror' isn't all horror. The movie begins at its scariest, then eases into what's more of a mystery crime/drama sprinkled with psychological and supernatural elements until tension builds up towards the climax once again. There is also the use of philosophical beliefs and superstition to progress the story.
The movie reminded not only myself, but another viewer of a survival-horror videogame (like Silent Hill) in the way that the story progresses with each bit of evidence obtained. Struck a dead end? Simply recall paperwork, photographs, dialogue with another character who may know a little more, etc. The eyes can be deceiving. This puts the viewer in the detective's shoes and gives a sense of accomplishment along the way.
Though the story may not be truly original, it does definitely stand on its own. It is something very unique with what it works with and the plot is coherent. The ending is something extremely rewarding and refreshing, sending everything you just saw and heard along the way back to hit you in the face and mess with your mind.
A great script with superb acting. Believable and distinguished characters. An unsettling atmosphere and nice special effects. Is the movies scary? There are a few jumps and nail-biting moments along the way, but it's hard to list it under a specific genre--in fact, it's even humorous many times with an intention to be so. But time flies through this 2 hour film because it never fails to entertain.
It has quickly become a favorite of mine. 5/5 |
