Good fighting movie. The plot is fairly generic but the choreograohy is very good. I was sorry to see Lo Mang's character killed off so early. However, Cheng Tien Chi's relationship with Chen Pei Hsi provides sparks and venom simultaneously.

Highly regarded Venoms movie, a bit silly for my taste, with plenty of blood and guts and farcical action scenes. If you like silly action scenes with ninjas and heads flying off, etc., you will probably like this. Not for the purists.

Absolutely one of the best Chang Cheh movies.

A must-see. You'll see the conflict between two clans(good verus evil) at the beginning of the movie. The evil clan can't win over the good clan, and they invited the Japanese warrior to spar with the chief, but one of the warriors was forced to killed himself just because he lost his weapon during the battle. Finally, Lo Meng, with bare hands (just like usual: no weapons), takes on the samurai and snatches his sword. Cheng Tien She, Wang Li, Chu Kho, Yu Tay Ping, and the super villain Chen Hui Min gives the the best performance in the last battle. The rest of the movie is full of gory action--lots of blood like you expect from director Chang Cheh. The story is pretty straightforward: revenge, revenge, kill, kill--a high bodycount.

Amazing action and great creativity in the ninjas' different element "styles." The film is exciting (and bloody) throughout. Loses one point as some of the action is sped up and the kung-fu men's costumes are really really bad (ninjas look good though!).

This movie, along with "Five Deadly Venoms", are my two favourite old school Shaw Brothers kung fu flix. I remember how everyone in the theatre was filled with emotions when I first saw this movie in the mid 80s. This movie deserves 10 stars out of five if you understand what I mean. I am extremely happy that the original version has been restored and his now available for collectors like myself. I gaurantee anyone that watches this movie will never forget it. A true classic from start to finish, one of the all-time best.

What is there really left to say....?! One of the most enjoyable Shaw Brothers movies ever made. And just an all around awesome old skool Ninja flick. For me, this is part of the ultimate Ninja movie trifecta, alongside NINJA IN THE DRAGONS DEN and DUEL TO THE DEATH. I leave all that Sho Kosugi, American Ninja crap to the ones that doesn't know any better. I was never really a big fan of Ricky Cheng Tien Chi, but in this movie he is great. So is Lo Meng in a good supporting role, and of course the Awesome Chan Wai Man as the fearsome Ninja leader.

If you're not thoroughly entertained by this movie.... check your pulse. This is a must-have.

FIVE ELEMENT NINJAS is a Chang Cheh film after the Venoms era. This is a showcase for the then up-and-coming Chen Thien Che, playing the lead as a young kung fu master of a martial arts clan, sworn to avenge the death of all his clan brothers, as well as his teacher, by a group of ninjas hired by his rival clan in death duels at the Five Element territory--a place set up by the ninjas to challenge any daring fighters or ambitious martial arts clans .

Being the only survivor of his clan, he then seeks help from his former teacher, who happens to possess the skills of ninjitsu, to teach him to defeat the ninjas.

Aided by three of his former teacher's disciples--Wang Li, Chu Khe, and Yu Thai Phing (always uncredited when appears on screen, poor him!)--the young master confronts the sadistic ninjas in their Five Element territory: the battle ground where his eight brothers met their death.

The film has its weak points, in terms of its flow, which drags in the middle and plot execution, which looks quite over the top and illogical at times.

The idea of having the ninjas, who are not in their homeland, build a battle zone called the Five Elements in China is sort of far-fetched, not to mention the ridiculous display of the words: gold, wood, water, fire and earth marking each of the areas.

However, this movie also has its strengths: the fights are stunning, equal to the ones found in the Venoms' movies; the ninja costumes are gaudy, with comic-book like characters; the various weapons, used by the ninjas and the heroes, are interesting as well.

Watching the last 20 minutes when our heroes fight the ninjas on each of the Five Element territories is a real spectacle, and the final fight with the King of Ninjas (Chen Hui Ming) is completely breathtaking!

Though this entry is not a Venoms flick, only Lo Mang co-stars, it does certainly has the Venom-like feel to it. Notably the characters and the fight sequences (Chu Khe choreographed) where lots of bloodshed and gore are common: arms and limbs torn apart, torso split in two, chests and stomachs ripped. Phew...

If you are a Venoms fan, this could be one of the non-Venom films considered belonging to your Venoms' film collection.

This is one of my favorite films. It's about this martial arts clan who are given a challenge by the 5 element ninjas after defeating a samurai from a rival clan. Of course the martial arts clan lose and are wiped out by the ninjas. one man survives and learns ninjistu from some old master and takes revenge. A lot of fights and all of it good. No doubt one of the best.

I would give this film 6 stars if I could! "Five Element Ninja" is the movie that Quentin Tarantino wishes were his.

The restored print [on the Celestial DVD] will have you saying "I don't remember seeing that part before". And the parts that you do remember look so much more colourful and properly centered in the new version.

"Five Element Ninja" will ambush your senses and spit out the bones.

[NOTE: This review refers to the Hong Kong DVD by Celestial.] Fantastic! Great surprises! Finally, after all these years, we get to see the complete version of this classic [on the Celestial DVD]. Comparing to my old VHS recording from TV decades ago, I was pleasantly surprised to see scenes I never thought existed. To me, compared to other edited for TV flicks, CSN was the most edited. Maybe because CSN was probably the goriest and bloodiest kung fu movie that aired. Now we get to see all the volumes of blood spurting everywhere we were never allowed to see. It's no coincidence Chang Cheh made most of characters wear all white clothes and filmed mostly in daylight. Add to that, the newly restored sound and colors! It's amazing how many colors are used in such a film so full of death and destruction. Today's films like this would have all been predictably dark and monotone. Chang Cheh was a genius to go against the norm.

This is a classic that is loved by most Venom fans, despite the fact that Lo Meng is the only original Venom cast (whereas there are other "baby" Venoms present). The opening scene is tops and sets the tone for the rest of the movie. Of course there are some campy moments galore (for instance, the golden tinfoil ninjas or even when Ricky Cheng Tien and his ninja brothers form that ridiculous formation which is resembles a circus act); but otherwise, Venom/costume era fans should enjoy this movie. Besides, you get to see some nice skimpy action from Chen Pei Hsi.

For this to get anything less than five stars is a travesty. While many moguls of kung fu cinema have tried their best to capture profoundity and epic story telling "Chinese Super Ninjas" does exactly what it sets out to do. What is that? Well it sets out to give the audience a ride to enjoy. It delivers ten fold.

From the opening you realize it's time to leave your sensibilities outside and witness gory action, outlandish characters and insane kung fu at its best. "Crouching Tiger..." this is not.

To say the violence is insane would be an understatement. Elemental ninjas suffer all manners of death including being torn in half. The good guys don't suffer any easier either!

Absolutely recommended to any kung fu fan and even those that aren't.

When you view this film leave logical plausibility outside at the door. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy the non stop gory-action, the colorful costumes, the jaw dropping stunts, and awsome storyline of revenge! Some count this as a Venom film with the presence of Lo Meng and some of the baby Venoms. I count this as a great spectacle of a Shaolin based clan going against ninjas. Michael Chun Wai Man is excellent as the Ninja Boss.

One of the best (and goriest) Shaw Brothers films. The director and some of the stars of "Five Deadly Venoms" create a truly memorable martial arts film. Great, creative fight scenes, set pieces, a simple yet interesting plot, and solid direction. Some of the effects are dated, but somehow it fits the story. I got this only because my favorite Venom, Lo Meng, is in it. I did not get the original language version. Anyone who is a Venoms fan knows how Lo Meng is treated in too many of their early movies. I thought that he would be at least one of the STARS surrounded by this cast. NOPE. I am happy I did not pay too much. I think I had to start watching this 3 or 4 times to finish it. I think people get this for Ricky Tien. I am just not a fan! This is one of the rare times when I cannot even remember the storyline and I refuse to watch it again to be reminded!

This movie displays action at its best. The first 5 to 10 minutes of the movie can put anyone that is interested in Chinese Martial arts in awe.

Of course let's not forget that typical Chinese art is better than Japanese art, just to set the pace. However, I am not really sure if the message of revenge was carried out in the right perspective. Here you have two schools with their best fighters, and because of a phrase a war between the schools is set off--or was it really those words? (Loss of a fight means loss of a life in Japanese.)

Nevertheless, awesome feats of acrobatic skills and martial arts fighting, even Lue Chan's (I think that is his name) part was very superb. And since he is the Kid With The Golden Arms it is even more amazing to see him move at such a fast pace.

I give Super Ninjas 2 thumbs up

[HKFlix Note: This review refers to the English dubbed PanMedia DVD.]

As a hardcore fan of Japanese "Ninja" films, (Iga/Koga people skilled in Ninjutsu arts), I was looking forward to seeing this HK take on "The Five Elements". I didn't expect it to be authentic in its portrayal of the art, like Raizo Ichikawa's great series "Shinobi No Mono", or even a cool fantasy version of Ninja, like Sonny Chiba's "Kage no gundan" or "Ninja Wars", but hoped it would be a bit more realistic than HK's typical version of a sneaky back-stabber with magic powers and lightning bolts shooting out of his ass. And the fact that [the version I watched] was an English [dub] caused concern, (Say NO To Dubs!).

So, when I popped it in and saw the Pan-Scan format, then heard the faux British dubbers that seem to be on every crap U.S. released Kung Fu flick I saw as a kid in the 70's I started to feel the old sharp pain in my ass that emanates from my rightside back pocket. I was now resigned to the fact that this was one of those crapfests that U.S. teens who say they love "Ninja" flicks saw along with American Ninja 4, (my buddy Dwayne was in that turd!), and thought "Ninja" are sooooo cool, ("and by cool I mean totally sweet." - RealUltimatePower.com). But I watched the thing anyway, paying very little attention, and it was okay... The fake blood spurted and flowed with obnoxious abandon like scenes from Lone Wolf & Cub, the coolest "Ninja" flicks ever! That was totally sweet, but still I thought it was no Shaolin Challenges Ninja or Duel To The Death.

Then I watched it once more, then again, and again, and again... Lo (Lieh) and behold, the damned thing grew on me like mold and I found myself being seduced by the cheesy special effects, Elvis meets Liberace costumes, and even the P.A.B. star, (I never got the fascination with 5 Deadly Venoms!) Now, after 30+ years as an Asian film freak and martial artist I've converted to O.G. HK "Ninja" flicks, kinda sorta... I now rank "Chinese Super Ninja" right up there with "Bastard Swordsman" and "Master of the Flying Guillotine" as way cool fantasy films that deserve to be in my collection.

First of all this movie's original title was "5 Element Ninja", which I prefer. However, the title "Chinese Super Ninja" seems to refer to the main character, who it fits.

The film starts with a great scene: two rival Chinese masters pit their ten top fighters against each other in a weapons battle. Interestingly, the weapons are based on actual weapons from an 18th-century catalog. Anyhow one master enlists the Japanese. The Japanese issue a challenge to the "good" master to send his best men to fight the 5 Element Ninja. This results in some of the best scenes ever--and it's only the first half of the movie.

The finale is unbelievable. This movie is quite violent. Basically, if you like ninja, this movie masterpiece cannot be missed!!!

NOTE: This review refers to the uncut verison of the film.

"Chinese Super Ninja" is yet another classic Shaw Brothers film.

The story is pretty easy to follow. One school is challenge by another but knows little about them being that there all ninjas. All the fighters that get sent out for the challenge die. Others stay back to protect the school incase the ninjas come for them.

They do end up coming to there school thanks to and inside ninja that they didnt know about. All but one lives and ends up returning back to an older teacher to help get revenge.

There's a ton of fight scenes most being weapon fights there are some hand combat but not much. It does drag on a little near the middle when it shows them at the school but it picks up once the ninjas make there way in. But the weapons fights are some of the best. They use a ton of weapons. All the fighters use different weapons.

This does have some gore scenes nothing over the top but back then it was a lot. Most of it dosnt happen until towards the end. Most of the fight scenes near the start show some blood from the weapons just like any other kung fu flick. But the gore in it is from body parts being ripped off most from the tree ninja scene and some spay blood effect.

Overall a classic shaw brother movie which does feature a few venoms but not the whole cast. Its still a great a movie for sure any shaw brother fans should pick this up.

NOTE: This review refers to the VHS version from Ground Zero.

Featuring most of the Venoms, this epic Venoms piece is one of the best films they made. Light on hand to hand work and heavy on weapons, the weapons choreography and fighting are flawless and eye-popping. The number of weapons featured is countless, which is great. The weapons work rivals, if not surpasses, the Return of the 5 Deadly Venoms and The Kid with the Golden Arms. The movie weighs in at a hefty 1 hour and 48 min., noticeably longer than the customary 90 min. of most films of this genre. The middle two-thirds of the film is somewhat belabored and bogged down. However, the movie is book-ended with the most awesome and tightly choreographed weapons fight sequences ever filmed by the Venoms. The film, while noticeably edited for violence and nudity, is still quite gory. Also, the film suffers from not being rendered in glorious widescreen Shawscope, as are many of the other "limited edition" Venom releases. The panning and scanning are attentive and efficient, yet the panner and scanner had to work at a frenetic pace at times to capture the action extending from one end of the screen to the other at lighting speed, as well as phalanxes of ninjas popping out of nowhere. Of the 15 or so Venom flicks I've seen, this rates up there in the top 4 or 5. This is a must-have for the Venom collector.
