A number of critics considered this to be the weakest of all Truffaut's works, but others also hailed this as the most underrated and overlooked of his films. Maybe what is important is that a flawed Truffaut picture is always more interesting than a mediocre one by any other mediocre filmmaker. And there is no denial that Bernadette Lafont delivers one of her best performances in this film.
