Even though there's not much of any martial art scenes I liked it. This movie is a great colourful dreamy fantasy.

This one will always be a classic like Labyrinth or The Never Ending Story. Many reviews mention how poor the effects are but I disagree, in my opinion the effects work well, the sets and characters however are truly incredible... The film is an amazing tale of politics, religion, love, life...

A very charming, erotic, dream-like story of moral, self righteousness, compassion and love. I never grow tired of viewing this elegant tale by HK's foremost fantasy director: Tsui Hark. His selection of Joey Wang as White snake and Maggie Cheung as the ever inquisitive Green snake is perfect. These 2 actresses have great chemistry together and provide a cohesive fabric weaving the tapestry that makes this picture special. A few 'steamy' scenes attest Maggie and Joey's skill without resorting to any nudity: one in which Maggie first appears as a human and joins in a very suggestive dance, a rainy segment when she and Joey snuggle together and finally a bathing scene when white and green snake enjoy a quiet time alone. Maggie's attempts at learning to walk is a hoot--as is her constant love for flies. The costumes, lighting, script and general 'flavor' to the film's appearance shows a magic these kind of stories have with the Asians. I particularly enjoy the haunting melody that whispers long after the film ends. Highly recommended as one of the top fantasy flicks of Asia. One and three quarter thumbs up.
