Overview:
A warm-hearted Czech film set against the background of accelerating political change in Prague on the eve of the 1989 Velvet Revolution, "Kolya" tells the story of the relationship between a middle-aged Czech man and the young Russian boy which innocence triumphed over cynicism and indifference. When Fantisek Louka (Zdenek Sverak), a down-at-heel virtuoso cellist, agrees to a marriage of convenience with a young Russian woman for financial reasons, his life is thrown into turmoil--the new bride takes off for Germany and leaves him having to look after her 5-year-old son, Kolya (Andrej Chalimon). The frightened boy speaks no Czech and Louka has never been close to a child, let alone cared for one. However, a struggle for understanding follows the first spontaneous touch of the child's hand which becomes moments of revelation to Louka. Eventually, this disparate couple embark together on a journey across language, generation, and personal barriers and learn from each other.
