| Overview: | In London in 1837, Swiss governess Elisabeth Laurier (Sophie Marceau) reluctantly accepts a financial proposition from an English aristocrat (Stephen Dillane) in order to release her father from debt. The man insists on concealing his identity from her.
Elisabeth travels to a hotel in Normandy, where, in utmost secrecy, the man joins her and they spend three nights together. What starts as a business transaction transforms into a revelatory experience for both of them. But their newfound passion for each other must be suppressed. The aristocrat is insistent they never meet again.
Nine months later, Elisabeth gives birth to a baby girl, but under the terms of her financial agreement, the child is immediately taken away from her.
Seven years pass, Elisabeth travels to Selcombe Place in Sussex in south of England. She has come to take up the post of governess to Louisa (Dominique Belcort), a notoriously rebellious seven year old child.
