TV script writer Harada, divorced, lives alone in an apartment. One night a young woman named Kei, who lives in the same building, visits him to share a drink. As most of the units are used as offices, he and Kei are the only ones who actually live there. On another night, Harada drops by Asakusa, Tokyo's ancient amusement quarter near which he was born and raised. There, to his surprise, he met his parents who died in an accident twenty-eight years ago. What he is seeing are in fact their spirits and they look as young as when they passed away. Feeling relaxed rather then terrified, Harada visits them often. Meanwhile Harada falls in love with Kei. Noticing him getting thinner by the day, Kei tells him to stop seeing his parents. Mamiya, his fellow worker, is also surprised at how often Harada skips business appointments and how weak he has become. Under Kei's insistence, Harada finally bids his parents farewell and watches them vanish. He weeps, experiencing the same remorse at parting twenty-eight years ago. Worried, Mamiya visits Harada and sees a blood-curdling episode: Harada, cadaverously thin, eye sunken, hair falling out, is making love to a ghastly figure: Kei is another ghost returned from the dead. When she first met Harada, she had already committed suicide after having been jilted by her lover. Her true nature bared, Kei rapidly fades toward the sky. Harada desperately tries to pursue, but Mamiya firmly restrains him. After a month of hospitalization, Harada ventures to Asakusa and the little house where his parents have once again received him. But he finds only a vacant lot, as the house has been torn down months ago...
