| Old school Shaw basher that will test even the most pious and patient action fan. Because the protagonist here is the envy of tree-hugging hippie pacifists everywhere.
If you thought that you were running low on patience when watching "The Big Boss", when Bruce just kept taking it and clutching his little promise medallion, then give this one a whirl! And I'll guarantee that you will rip your hair out and scream at the screen, "FOR THE LOVE OF BUDDHA, STRAP ON A PAIR AND KICK SOME FUCKING AAAASSSSS!!!"
This guy makes Jesus look like he needs anger management. The bad guys beat, stab, rape and kill everyone that this guy cares about. They kick his ass repeatedly and stiff him out of his pay. And he just stands there and takes it, like a slab of meat with a stupid pudding bowl haircut. Aaaargh, it's so friggin' frustrating!
In the end, he finally grows some stones and wigs out on the villains. But by then, it is just too little, too late.
It also doesn't help that the actor, Chen Wo Fu, is dull as can be, and looks slightly retarded. Just a big lumbering lurch with a vacant stare, the grace of an epileptic at a laser show, and the charisma of wet cardboard. He apparently killed himself before the movie was released... yeah, no shit! He was probably embarrassed, or saw an early screening, and just couldn't take it anymore, much like I couldn't. It was like watching that one kid at the playground, who just kept getting picked on and picked on, without ever standing up for himself. Man, this was beyond aggravating.
The whole laid back Tai Chi-self restraint philosophy wasn't lost on me, but this was ridiculous. I don't wanna' see the hero (and I use the term loosely here) turn the other cheek, much less take it in the tailpipe, in my kung fu movies. If you do, then by all means, go ahead and watch this. I dare you to sit through it without grabbing your gat and shooting the TV, Elvis style, out of sheer anger and annoyance. Enjoy. |

 | | | | Frankly, this movie started out with a lot of promise, but did not reach its full potential. The lead actor, Chen Wo Fu, who committed suicide before this film was released, really tried. Using the teachings of tai chi we watch our hero get continuously beat up, his best friend killed, his master murdered, and his girlfriend raped, before he finally fights back. With the lovely Shih Szu portraying his master's daughter, we finally get to the action, which is about the last twenty-five minutes of the film. Frankly, I felt a big let down. Not even the villainous performance of Frankie Wei could save this film from a lackluster pay-off! Lots of slow motion and average fighting. | | AGREE? | READER COMMENTS | AUTHOR | | Y | Right again Sarge. Plus the fact that the kung fu wasn't very interesting didn't help. It's basically watching a guy get the tar beat out of him for 82 minutes. | William Giordanella |

| The main star is Chen Wo-Fu, who was a Tai Chi champion who committed suicide at 24 just before the release of this movie, according to his biography on the DVD. This movie is really slow to begin and for the first hour all you see is the hero and a few of his friends get beaten up by second class fighters (Frankie Wei and Chan Shen are not great villains!). The fights are of poor quality and the martial arts skills showed are way below average. More of what you would see in a brawl. Chen Wo-Fu (he also had a few minor roles in other Shaw movies) is simply not a good screen fighter (maybe we can blame the choreographer for this?) and does not have much charisma either, if any. We wait an hour for the 20-minute finale where Chen Wo-Fu releases all his "fury", but the action is really not worth the wait! Very ordinary skill techniques and the special Tai Chi moves are done in slo-mo. Shih Zsu, who's great with the sword, plays the old teacher's daughter. Her performance here is very average and her techniques slow. She's way better in sword flicks. If you want to see real Tai Chi Chuan, I would suggest you see "The Secret of Tai Chi"--a low budget film with an unknown cast, but you'll get the surprise of your life! That's Tai Chi Chuan, not what's shown in this movie (although the old teacher does show a few basic moves in the beginning). |

| Very entertaining. The Shadow Boxer is one of Shaw bros' rares and also stars real life tai chi champion Chen Wo-Fu, who committed suicide soon after the production of this movie. Chen Wo Fu play ku ding, a construction worker who struggles to obey the philosophy of tai chi and his master's teaching to hold back from his skills and tolerate the cruelty from the bad guys. But in a split second Ku ding finds his world falling apart, his master is murdered, his girlfriend gets raped, and his best friend is killed. So enough is enough and ku ding finally gives in and takes revenge. The most interesting this about this movie is that the lead actor was not the usually hot head and quick to use his fist like in most of the Shaw bros films. Which that is what I like the most about this character. Also Shih szu appears in the movie as ku ding's master daughter. She's not the best martial artist but she held her own. But to be honest I would have rather seen Lily Li in that role. Overall, a very good movie, definitely worth checking out. Not your typical Shaw bros movie, you'll have to see it to see what I mean. Once again very good. |
