| Time for a confession - I've always had a sneaking admiration for this movie. It's probably one of the better UK comedies of recent years, and is daft enough to be funny. It also has a stonkingly fine soundtrack by Yello, with the main theme based on hit single 'The Race'.
Idle and Coltrane play Brian and Charlie, a pair of disillusioned bank robbers desperate to escape from the homicidal tendencies of their boss, Case. They hit on the plan of stealing the proceeds of their next raid, a hit on the local Chinese triad gang. Brian's girlfriend, Faith (a charmingly ditzy performance by Coduri) gets wind of a double-cross, which will see Brian and Charlie killed, so she tries to stop them, only to be wounded in all the confusion of the botched raid. Brian and Charlie escape with the suitcases of cash and hide in a nunnery. And of course, that's where all the fun and confusion begins.
This was one of the final movies made by George Harrison's Handmade Films and, and while it might not be a classic in the same way that Some Like It Hot is, it still wears well as both a caper movie and a comedy thriller. Idle and Coltrane work very well together, their characters as different as chalk and cheese, and yet they are brothers in adversity, whether being chased by their old gang, the triads, the police or the nuns! Considering the low budget of three million pounds one has to hand it to director Jonathan Lynn that he was able to get so much on screen: the stunt work and the chase certainly don't look too shabby... |
