| Excellent early slasher movie and the best Christmas-based horror movie out there. One of the best features of the movie are the obscene and creepy phone calls that are at once recognizable (at least in the days before caller ID) but also have that extra bit of surreal creepiness to them.
Excellent cast, including Olivia Hussey as our head strong and thoroughly modern heroine. Her character is exceptional for not being the 'good girl'. In fact one of the key plot points is she is having an abortion, which through the lens of American morality makes her a very 'bad girl' and yet she is very real and you can't help but fear for her, especially towards the end. The entire cast is very real, something many slasher films and horror movies in general have long struggled with. The
ending might leave some people unsatisfied, I know several of my friends have often complained about the ending, that it doesn't give real closure to anything. But that is something I really liked about it: it lets you, the viewer, try to connect the dots, and I've always thought the ending was extremely effective. It is a better twist than having the supposedly dead killer coming back to life to have one more go at the sexy teens who didn't die on the first go 'round.
An excellent Christmas film for those in the mood for a holiday film with a really twisted edge. |
