When Lars von Trier was a nobody, back in Denmark where we both come from, and he had a hard time getting anybody interrested in his 'Element of Crime', no matter what they said in Cannes, most people thought 'This guy is weird enough that we'll likely hear more from him'.

Anybody who has watched 'The Idiots' knows what his capable of. Call that one controversial, call it provocative--I call it honest, truthful and straight to the point. That one is the ugly truth about you and me and our prejudices.

With 'Breaking the Waves' he brings over Vibeke Vindelov from 'The Idiots'. I am not much fond of her style, though she was a perfect fit for 'The Idiots'. However, the critics are still raving about her, apparently.

'Breaking the Waves' is more about breaking taboos than waves, in an uptight, religiously screwed-up coastal community where the local church all of a sudden 'doesn't have a bell' when a local girl marries an outsider.

Love shows no mercy for the newlyweds, and the girl's mental stability starts deteriorating. Slowly you climb from Heaven to Hell.

It's a typical von Trier movie set in a merciless coastal small town and it pits the beautiful in us against the ugly in us. Will we hear the bells toll in the end?
