Overview:	In 1939 Japan was caught in the tide of rapidly deteriorating world events and its commitments in the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Anti-Comintern Pact. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, albeit strongly opposed to the pact, was appointed commander in chief of the combined imperial Japanese fleet. When war broke out in Europe, Japan was obliged to join, and the Pacific War began with the attack on Pearl Harbor under Admiral Yamamoto's command.
