| A gritty and tragic tale of betrayed love in quest for wealth and power. A man dreaming of wealth sacrifices his most precious assets, his loving wife and son, in a scheme to clear his gambling debts and position himself as an important executive in the business. It begins with loving Brigitte Lin placing her life on the line by embezzling $500,000 of her employer's money to help her husband (Tony Leung) meet his obligations with the local Tong. Tony, meanwhile, gambles the money away, threatening both her job and their house. Later, after they visit Thailand and unsuccessful beg for money from his uncle so she can replace the money stolen from her employer, Tony "assists" Brigitte into the ocean. (He blames her for their plight--go figure). Thinking her dead he returns home and becomes executive of the construction co. he works for. Thru deceit he gains wealth and betrays his company to their rival then plans to skip the country. That is until Brigitte returns, seeking vengeance. A not too pretty picture of revenge and the price one pays for material gain. The last ten minutes are literally explosive. Fine portrayal by both Lin (no, not in her babe-with-blade role) and Leung (not in his lighter, comical roles one is used to seeing). A full thumbs up! |
