For a film directed by Chor Yuen and choreographed by Yuen Wo Ping, I expected a little more. Tsung Hua stars as an orphaned bumpkin searching for the parents he never knew. Lily Li portrays a little beggar that befriends and falls in love with Tsung Hua.

Our hero, ignorant of the ways of life, is soon framed for a murder committed by the lookalike brother he never knew. This is all orchestrated by his evil rich father who in fact raped a maid that turned out to be his mother. The father is willing to sacrifice his bastard son in order to save his favorite son at all costs!

With this said, I thought the story, direction, and acting were good, especially Lily Li. Tsung Hua was just a little too naive for me, but that's how his character was scripted. There are some fight scenes, but you mainly get most of the action in the last twenty minutes of the film. Overall a good feature but I thought it could have been better. A nice drama for some, action lovers beware unless you fast forward to the end.

Fighting a guy like yourself must be hard in this, 'The Bastard'. A young man is used by an evil gang to replace the evil boss' son in jail, because they looked the same as each other. It has a very average story and action scenes.

If you want realistic fight scenes and/or a good story, this is for you. I almost passed this by, but the price and original language convinced me to buy this. "The Bastard" is a naive boy who befriends a beggar girl on his search for his father. He does find his father and this is when he learns some very harsh lessons about the variety and complexities of human nature. At times heart wrenching, this is also a movie that makes great use of realistic martial arts and values such as frienship, honesty, love, and poetic justice.

One of Tsung Hua's greatest roles, and Lily Li's performance is touching to say the least. The choreographing of the fight scenes are superb in this film. A gritty, moving look at the hard facts of being destitute.
