Transfer:
I think Mei Ah did a good job on this one. Granted, there are many instances where that "ghosting" effect can be seen, but that really doesn't detract too much from the transfer as a whole. Seeing as how the film takes place in a single dark night, the transfer does a solid job with the black levels. The film is not colorful in the least, so the only colors you'll see in the film are black, white, and the dark green of the PTU officers' outfits. Everything holds up well enough, but I can't help but think that the transfer could have been a tad bit better.
Sound:
Now this is what I'm talking about. An excellent, agressive DTS track is here for all to hear. This really does sound incredible. Strong bass comes into play when it's needed. Frequent use of the surrounds make everything sound nicely dynamic. The fantastic musical score comes through crystal clear, and the dialogue is never difficult to hear over anything. Nice work, Mei Ah.
Extras:
Sadly, Mei Ah skimped on the extras slightly. Other than the Cast and Crew section (which only tells you who the cast and crew are, without filmographies and the like), there's a trailer for PTU, and another for a DV film called 20/30 DICTIONARY that looks surprisingly good. There's also a subtitle-less interview featuring Johnnie To and a very cool looking Simon Yam. |
