Overview:
Hanna and Barbera's "Tom & Jerry" films are the epitome of the Hollywood cartoon. They took a simple premise and added funny gags and great animation to create a perfect entertainment series. The characters in and of themselves are funny: the mangy gray cat Tom, the innocent yet wise mouse Jerry. Both are obsessed: one will do anything to catch his prey, the other will do anything to survive. A typical "Tom & Jerry" is anything but typical. Tom chases Jerry out west, under the Christmas tree, at the beach, underwater, on the gold course, and in a bowling alley, among many looney locations. Jerry is befriended by bulldogs, sucks, muscle-bound cousins, lions, and elephants! The purest "Tom & Jerry" cartoon is perhaps "Kitty Foiled", as this cartoon has the least "plot". In this film, Tom chases Jerry (aided by a canary) around the house for a solid seven minutes of mayhem. Hanna and Barbera found a surprising number of twists to the formula chase scenario. "Mouse In Manhattan" is a surprisingly heartfelt solo Jerry cartoon in which the mouse takes off for the big city. The beautiful background paintings of the city from a mouse-sized perspective and Scott Bradley's score (made up mostly of "Manhattan Serenade" and "Broadway Rhythm") highlight the film.
