| Overview: | A young painter and a popular singer meet very politely by chance at a resort hotel, and scandal-mongering journalists blow it up into a secret romance. The two decide to fight the press in court, and an impoverished old lawyer takes it upon himself to help. They finally make some headway in their case after an unexpected twist of events.
Criticising irresponsible, sensationalistic journalism, Kurosawa's film is at one level a soap opera from which every last tear is shamelessly wrung by his established cast. Look closely, however, and you'll detect a caustic parody of the genre it appears to ape and a satire on the Japanese willingness to accept the alien culture thrust upon them by America.
