Great gothic vampire tale from Japan. It has elements from both the Hammer Films of the 50s and 60s and also a little "Kolchak The Night Stalker", but what it doesn't have is the romantic idealizing of the vampire that all modern vampire movies seem required to have. This is a monster--a blood dripping, friends and loved ones killing monster--not some mopey eye-shadow sporting emo boy whom the main character falls in love with because underneath all the blood drinking and murder is a sad little boy yearning for true love.
These are the only good kind of vampire movies. The settings are spooky, the atmosphere tense with dread, and the vampires bloodthirsty. |
