This movie does not have characters so much as people representing abstract concepts: The Caring Boss; The Good Independent Woman (the ubiquitous Grace Chang); The Good Shy Woman, and The Sexy Semi-Bad Girl (Julie Yeh Feng, a personal favorite). The good girls are rewarded with husbands, the semi-bad girl is left on the sidelines without a man of her own. The Good Shy Woman's boyfriend is a nonentity, while the Good Independent Woman's boyfriend is a bit more complex. Jealous, temperamental, a drinker when he gets angry, he nonetheless saves the day for the Good Independent Woman. The thought of his being anybody's husband, however, is a chilling prospect.
Filmed in what seems to be primary technicolors, this is a fun movie to watch even though it holds no surprises. It is a frolic, and I mean that in the best sense of the word. |
