Vanessa Paradis is instantly lovable in "The Girl On The Bridge. She is breathtakingly gorgeous. Her character, a suicidal, waifey tramp of a girl, is beguiling. It's easy to see how Gabor, the knife thrower, wants to take her in and turn her into the assistant he desperately needs to step up his cabaret act.

Along the way, he finds her to be one of the luckiest creatures alive...especially as he throws knives at her for the crowd's amusement.

"You need to have them fall in love with you," he says to her about the crowds who come to the circuses they perform in.

Filmed in black and white and entirely in French, there are bits of humour that accent the love story...like when the girl seduces a newlywed husband...or when she falls in with the contortionist of the circus...

Mainly, this film has beautiful imagery, compelling actors, and a wonderful story that seems timeless...

The love affair between a knife thrower and his very lucky assistant.
