How this sloppy DVD makes me long for more of the pristine and gorgeously colored Shaw Bros discs from Celestial. This is a terrible transfer of a poorly made...1970s era indie kung fu movie (first effort from Seasonal Pictures)...the poor quality of the Mei Ah DVD transfer (even the film stock changes noticeably within scenes, and none of the subtitles fit within the frame, making much of the story details incoherent) really mars the film. Typical for 1970s kung fu movies, all the film music except for a heroic Chinese theme near the end is ripped off from Italian Westerns (Morricone’s BIG GUNDOWN, mostly).

Secret Rivals 1 is fullscreen (not widesreen like it says in the cover) and is not that good. SR 2 has better widescreen picture and is very entertaining as a matinee.
