Transfer:
The film was made in 1999, but you would never know it from looking at this transfer. It looks like it was made in the 80s! The image is soft, blurry, and suffers from a lot of halo-ing. There are some occassional specks and scratches to be seen as well. I wish I could say something good about the transfer here, but there's nothing good to be said, unfortunately.
Sound:
To add insult to injury, and further making the film feel like an 80s production, we're only given a mono soundtrack. Dialogue and music is very low, meaning you'll have to turn the volume up to hear it clearly. The sound is frequently muffled as well.
Extras:
Same ol', same ol'...going to the Star's files section, we're greeted by one file for Anthony Wong. That's it. Trailers are included for this and other Universe releases. Nothing worth noting here.
Overall:
If you can get past the poor audio/visual presentation of the DVD and the oddly paced first 20 minutes of the film, there is some enjoyment to be had with KING OF DEBT COLLECTING AGENT. While nowhere near a classic, the film has enough charm going for it thanks to Nick Cheung, who pulls double duty to keep the film from sinking. The supporting cast isn't given much to do, but Nick's character is intriguing enough to overlook that. A definite recommendation for fans of Nick Cheung. |
