PRODUCTION NOTES:
Everyone dreams of having a special love. Breathtaking passion, breathtaking romance. And everyone dreams about a very normal happy ending. However, in "Road Movie," they dream about a love that's not all the more special. A man loves a man, and a woman loves the man who loves him. They don't have the freedom to dream of a romantic love. Nor the hope to dream of a happy ending. The even say that their love isn't real love. Everyone in the world calls him by another name, that is, a gay man. This other name deprives him of the right to love in the face of others. However, as his love gradually gets deeper and the more he denies it, it rather burns into their hearts. Even the word love is painful for them. "Road Movie" is a film about this love.

Korea is known to be an area that's forbidden to gay films. "Road Movie" is a film that defies all rules. However, "Road Movie" is starkly different from the gay films made till today. Until now, gays have been treated as circus acts, but in "Road Movie" they're treated on an equal footing. The man who loves him, but who can't love him back, and a woman in between them. Each of them aim for different goals, but their hopeless love never stops. In "Road Movie," a gay man loves a heterosexual man, but the movie tells us that love holds the same importance for everyone. The movie clearly shows the pains of love more so through a gay man's love.

Departing on the road with the scorching sun on their backs, they walk down an endless path. The roads, sea, and mountains spread out before them. They meet unexpected events on the road, along with strangers. Afraid to deviate from the norm, they can never experience the unpredictable freedom and love on the road they set out on. A person who encounters love on the road will know. The love found within unpredictable freedom can only get more intense. However, the intense scenery and intense story in "Road Movie" clash into each other to create a unique ambience in the film. Because of this, the road is another character in this movie. What we can also call a "road movie of emotions." Since showing the characters mind is an important theme, the roads in "Road Movie" speak to the audience. The space and scenery are not just the images of those places, but they are the "other character" that together experience the transformations of the characters' emotions. So that's why a road movie casts the road. "Road Movie" is a road movie that contains a new sensibility.

The camera in "Road Movie" is objective. The picture is not constructed within the viewfinder. It just looks, and doesn't interfere. The actors are always aware of the camera, but their acting was never restricted. In a long take of at least 10 minutes, the actors are absorbed into their characters, crying and laughing all they want. The camera only captures the moment when the actors are totally absorbed in their characters. In "Road Movie," a 16mm camera quilts the scenes. The director and cinematographer agreed to be experimental by mostly using handheld camera movements and no lights for the scenes, in order to make a movie that had the most honest and realistic feel to it. The director, who affirmatively said this film had to be a road movie of emotions, thought he needed a software that didn't miss the actor's emotions and movements in order to capture their best performance. To this regard, he concluded that since one roll of 35mm film can only be used for 4 minutes of shooting, whereas one roll of 16mm film can last up to 12 minutes, using 16mm would be the most efficient way to continuously shoot the actors' emotions throughout the scene. Also, in order to capture the present images of 2001 Korea, even if it may be a little rough, the director believed that a documentary touch was needed to show reality as it is. So he outwardly decided not to use any lights and instead thought of a new approach by adding light to the scenes in post production. This is a new approach he carefully thought over in order to capture the moment when the actors' emotions come in touch with the roads' emotions. In order to give the actors freedom and to show the realities of 2001 Korea as it is, the filmmakers went ahead with a production and post production method never before attempted in Korea. In "Road Movie," you will find the birth of a new style.
