Acting as director Kim Jong-Hak's right hand man, he experienced the production a big-scale drama series with the scale and story equal to any blockbuster films. Therefore, his debut in film was different from others. By directing Korea's first fantasy adventure blockbuster film, he has taken the unmapped road with no one to ask for guidance. Nevertheless, as he had skillfully coordinated overseas location productions of long periods and the melodramas that traveled through the times in TV dramas, it is expected that he will show solid directing skills in without a doubt. |

PRODUCTION NOTES:
The Dream Team is Back!!!
'Noon Entertainment' + Writer Koh Eun-Nim + KTB Entertainment
A new legend is being created with by NOON Entertainment(President Choi Nak-Kwon) (which successfully debuted in the film scene having attracted more than a million domestic audiences by presenting in early 2001 a unique melodrama film called ), KTB Entertainment(CEO Kwon Jae-Ryun) (which officially started last October as a specialized investment company for entertainment as an affiliate company of KTB Networ) and writer Koh Eun-Nim (who became a rising star in Korean cinema having received the Best Script Award at 38th Grand Bell Awards and Baeksang Arts Awards).
is Korea's first fantasy adventure film. As its first film, KTB Entertainment fully financed the production cost of amounting to 8 billion won. The film advocates Korea's first ever fantasy action adventure with the ambitious film of the duo, Producer Choi Nak-Kwon and writer Koh Eun-Nim. Having established an amicable relationship based on trust with the production company through their previous film, KTB Entertainment fully financed the production cost of 8 billion won based on solid trust in the production company as well as the script. Korea's first fantasy adventure movie is expected to hit Summer of 2002 as a 'legend' of Korean cinema's dream team.
Presenting a new paradigm in Korean blockbuster movies.
As seen in the successful cases of foreign adventure blockbusters like , , , and , the film genre loved by movie fans all over the world is of the fantastic adventure stories with cool actions and spectacles. It's no exaggeration to say that the adventure genre that shows the world of dreams, fantasies and exciting adventures in unknown territories that modern people cannot experience in their daily lives, gives the basic fun and dream expected in a 'movie' by the general audience. Until now, however, Hollywood-style adventure genre films were totally nonexistent in Korean cinema. In order to create visual images of unreal dreams and fantasies, shooting in foreign locations and use of high-tech computer graphics(CG) technologies are inevitable and naturally an increase in the production cost is accompanied. Therefore, considering the current situation in Korea that focused on dramas, melodramas, and comedies of 1 to 2 billion won production budget, adventure genre films could only remain as an unexplored field. Fortunately, in 2002, Korean cinema entered a new phase of rapid progress allowing for the talk of a 'renaissance' in all areas such as production environment, distribution situation, and optimistic audience response. Moreover, our CG technology is developing fast enough to be a match for Hollywood technology. Now is the time to make a challenge into the 'adventure' genre films that we ourselves couldn't make even though our audiences loved very much those kinds of films. Therefore, now steps forward to present an original adventure film full of our own sensitivity and the accumulated know-how of Korean cinema to the millions of adventure film fans in Korea who dream of a new fantasy and adventure.
strives to differentiate itself by its genre that represents Korea's first 'fantasy adventure'. This genre is a combination of the adventure that is rarely found in many films made in Korea and the fantasy genre that is strongly influencing all fields of culture today such as games, cartoons, and novels. Also, as much as it is the first 'only fantasy adventure' film among Korean blockbusters, new and daring trials in pure Korean special effects technology will set a new horizon in Korean blockbusters. In order to do so, out of 's total budget, 2.5 billion won will be invested in sophisticated special effects and CG production. CINEPIX, Korea's best 3D animation production company that received international recognition as well as one that has the technology and ultramodern computer special effects, and MDM, leader in making miniature in blockbuster films, are expected to create a realistic visual image with our own technology that will be just as good as in Hollywood films. Through an exquisite harmony between the spectacular visual images that totally embodies Korea's special effects technology and the new adventures and drama that agrees with our sentiments, the film will fantastically satisfy the expectations of the audience.
Revealing the essence of a film with substance
As an action adventure movie, offers a variety of attractions that is just as good as in any Hollywood films. On the grand screen that was captured by Panavision HD camera that was the first to be introduced in Korea, the technology of CINEPIX will add to the fantastic aspects of the screen. CINEPIX is a company that produced the 3D animation called ,which will be go through distribution with Warner Bros in the U.S. Also, there is the Art team that worked on various famous commercials and films, the set production team that built sets for Korea's top-quality films, the MDM that quickly rose in just a few year to become Korea's best miniature team with their outstanding skills, Korea's special effects team that is proud of their best quality works, and the Thai staff who proudly boasts of international reputation for having taken in charge of Hollywood films shooting on location in Thailand. The spectacular visuals made through the tears and sweat of these competent staff will be responsible for the cool attractions in the film. In addition to that, the solid screenplay by writer Koh Eun-Nim that lively portrays a unique and delicate sensitivity will combine with the visuals to make the film into a film of substance. In , the vivid and human drama of each individual main characters that include a variety of generations and the Korean sentiment is alive with the exciting spectacles of the film that any movie fan would favor in an adventure film. While the audience sympathizes, without disapproval, with the fantastic adventure story that unfolds up against Korean actualities that isn't far from reality or unfamiliar, they can sink into the great fun and excitement that only can give. Like so, with compact attractions with fun and excitement, will present itself as a true film of substance that can totally set aside the lack of confidence until now in blockbusters that seemed a bit empty compared to its size and expectations.
Declaring a differentiation in casting
With enough strong confidence to attract the audience with only the movie and not depend on the reputation of top stars, and the ambition to expand the possibility of choice in Korean cinema that suffers from lack of actors, first attempted a challenging and epoch-making casting system that casts without hesitation talented and fresh new actors in a blockbuster film of 8 billion won production budget.
Kim Jung-Hak who showed a tight confrontational act with Seol Kyung-Ku and Lee Sung-Jae in director Kang Woo-Suk's , Kim Bo-Kyung who reappears as the perfect 'heroine of the screen' after playing the heroine in the film , Ahn Suk-Hwan who is a 'senior' actor proudly known for his acting performances of depth as much as his wide range of various performances, Lee Jong-Soo who is rising as the next shooting star in Korean cinema after appearing in , Chun Jung-Myung who has the qualities to become the next top star with his handsome features and sincerity, and lastly, Park Joon-Hwa who is an 8-year-old child actor gifted with brightness.
Their faces are still quite unfamiliar to us but the production team has strong faith in them for they not only have the appearance of the characters portrayed in the script but also the solid acting abilities. They will naturally soak into the film as 'main characters' of the film and not as 'leading stars' in Korea's first fantasy adventure film. Instead of depending on the fame of actors, it was 's very strategy to cast a new face that will accentuate the film by dissolving 100% into the plot with confidence in the screenplay. Also, by casting potential new actors in a blockbuster film of 8 billion won budget, there lies an ambitious intention to present new actors of various personalities and reliable acting skills.
In Korean film scene where there is much lack of young actors in their 20s, watch closely to find out if the reliable main characters can be born again.
In , the Panavision HD (HD:high-definition) camera was used. With only a few in the world and with a non-convertible price, the rental fee itself was over 300 million won. The film will be the first in Korea to use the high-tech camera that put together the Panavision lens with Sony's latest 'HDW-F900' model. This is the same one used in George Lucas' that will be released in the United States in May. In Korea, is the first film to be shot by this camera.
The high definition camera 'Sony HDW-F900' has much more scanning lines (1920/1080 pixels) than existing cameras. Therefore, it is an ultramodern camera equipment that has much higher resolution and an accurate color reproduction as well as showing a clear contrast between light and shade. Due to its needlessness of having to change films, filming with HD camera displays swift mobility in filming action scenes that are the life of dynamic scenes. Also, with the 24p (24 frames per second) method, it allows the creation of elaborate and graceful scenes just as good as films. Moreover, by using the Panavision lens that can be said to exclusively take charge of Hollywood films, it has the advantage of presenting a spectacular scene to the audience through a screen much wider than ordinary broadcasting cameras or film lens. Instead of the normally used screen ratio of 4:3, the cinemascope screen ration of 16:9 that is much closer to a movie screen adds to the grandness of the scene.
The Panavision lens was previously used in Korean films before but with lack of technical understanding and insufficient systematic support, it's true that they didn't produce results. However, in order to fulfill such insufficient aspects, production improved the shortcomings by carrying out many tests and receiving enough training that came with the renting of the camera at PDIJ(Panavision Digital Imaging Japan) which boasts its accumulated knowledge acquired through many experiences. Thus, it is prospected to greatly contribute to the development of cinematography in Korean films.
Furthermore, the editing system especially for HD called 'SONY XPRI' was used in the post-production stage for the first time in the world. Therefore, a system was established that can make use of the characteristics of the HD camera to the utmost. With the establishment of the digital system in the post-productions, the CG composition was much easier and it allowed for much elaborate and accurate operations that made it possible to express visual images of much magnificent quality and of grand scale. In 's case, as much as it required brilliant computer graphic technology and special effects than any other films, the grand scenes created by filming with the HD camera will present images that are fantastic and dynamic.
Currently, with the increasing use of HD camera in various drama series and show programs on TV, the great high quality screen images that are much more remarkable than those created through the present analogue system will soon be presented to the general audience. |

| Thailand, location of The Hottest Film of Summer of 2002. On-the-Spot Sketch of Thailand's 'Sangkraburi' location where the nightmare of 30 years ago is recreated in adventure and fantasy
At midnight, January 10th of the year before, in the outbacks about 520km from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, the sound of bullets and earth rattling bombs could be heard at 'Sangkraburi', a border region between Thailand and Myanmar. The production team was in the middle of shooting in Thailand to recreate the fantastic adventure scenes such as calamities and the large-scale battle scenes rarely seen in Korean film productions as well as the biggest scene in the ultra grand scale blockbuster film, with a total production budget of 8 billion won.
Like the subtropical region it is, 'Sangkraburi' is a beautiful town of exotic atmosphere at the border region between Thailand and Myanmar. Situated at about 520km north-west of Bangkok, it is truly a rugged countryside that takes about 7 to 8 hours by car. It is such an isolated area that even the people in Thailand have hardly ventured there. This fantastic location is the place that was found after numerous trials in hunting for a location with the help of the local company that specializes in the field. The scene that was shot from the afternoon of January 10th to 2 in the morning of the next day was the story of Grandpa Hwang(Ahn Suk-Hwan) who goes into his own past first out of the 6 characters who experience their own adventures after being swept into a world of fantasy through the 'R.U. Ready? House'. For 30 years, Grandpa Hwang has been living a dark life with the emotional scar of having lost all his soldiers in Vietnam because of a regrettable mistake. As his nightmare is recreated, the past and present is fantastically overlapped. Also, the scene is significant for it sets the real beginning of the 6 main characters' turbulent adventures in . It had further special meaning for it was a grand-scale scene that couldn't be shot again costing 250 million won out of the 8 billion won budget.
The production team of about 100 people mixed with Korean and Thai staff and 40 extras were in the middle of preparing the recreation of the battle. The mountain ridge that was once a banana plantation, was transformed into the battlefields of Vietnam. Around the log barracks built in various places, trenches and transportation routes were made while barbed-wire barricades and machine guns were hidden here and there. It was perfectly recreated by the Thai Art Director in one month. It was the day when the 250 million won set will be blown up to shoot the spectacular explosion and fire scene on the mountain ridge. Explosives were planted around the set to create the scene by setting off explosives all at once. Because this was a dangerous scene that was impossible to shoot again, not only the production team but also the press that flew in to cover the production scene were all nervous.
After practicing the perfect movements and rehearsing over a long period of time, the shooting finally began. With an enormous thundering boom, explosions and flames were set ablaze for about 20 minutes to produce a war scene that seemed to resemble the real thing. After the consecutive explosions and as the place was left with only smoke, there was only dead silence on the scene. Upon the director Yoon Sang-Ho's voice shouting 'Cut!', about 200 Korean and Thai production team and the attending press started to applaud, deeply moved by the fact that the most difficult war scene has successfully finished. Also, this day's explosion scene with ear-piercing noise and burning flames that resembled a real battlefield was the masterpiece work of the special effects engineer, Park Kwang-nam, who prides in having a 40 year career in this field. Despite his old age, he had displayed true professionalism, running throughout the set without sparing himself, that receive much praise and a strong impression on the younger staffs and actors. Since the place of the set was a dangerous place close to the borderline of Miyanma where there were still many small civil disputes among the minority races, even though the shooting was granted official permission by the Thai government, there was the possibility of being misunderstood for a real battle due to the noisy explosions and flames. It was later rumored that Mr. Park Kwang-Nam regreted the fact that he wasn't in the situation to produce the amount of explosion or flame of his choice.
The six main protagonists of the film are Kim Bo-Kyung of , Kim Jung-Hak of , Ahn Suk-Hwan, Lee Jong-Soo of , a new actor Chun Jung-Myung, and Park Joon-Hwa. While performing intensely as their own characters during such a dangerous scene, the six actors didn't forget to look out for one another when the director shouted 'cut'. Especially, the only female actor on the set, Kim Bo-Kyung who plays the theme park's animal researcher, almost got her hand burnt, even at such a dangerous moment she displayed calmness that surprised the press on the site. The actors and staff who worked hard for about a month had to suffer much hardship due to the steamy hot weather as well as having to shoot endlessly the disasters and dangerous scenes suited for a real adventure film. Also, it was a difficult experience with local food that didn't quite agree with their taste and most of all, they suffered from missing Korean people and homesickness that came with being isolated from the outside world. For that reason, they warmheartedly greeted the press from Korea and at the request of the photographers, all 6 actors agreed to do even the most difficult poses without showing any sign of exhaustion. |

PRODUCTION NOTES:
25% of the production budget was invested to recreate that place of our imaginations.
'R.U. Ready? House', the decisive version of Korean traditional aesthetics, a Vietnamese military base of 30 years ago, the 'Haunted Mansion' in one's illusions, etc. , an elaborate film that carefully planned its set production.
The film is an adventure film set in a theme park. It tells a story about 6 people who came to the theme park and by chance they are sucked into a world of fantasy where they must go through the pains of their own nightmares and escape from them. In order to display the world of fantasy and adventure, the Art team's job was to create a set through only a few lines in the screenplay. Almost 25% of the 6 billion won production cost was invested in the construction of sets to create a world of fantasy of grand scale that was hard to see in Korean films and also unrealistic and very Korean.
The place where the 6 theme park visitors go into while escaping the animals' commotion during a safari tour is the 'R. U. Ready? House' which is also the title of the film as well as the Art team's ambitious piece of work. The Art Director, Lee Min-Bok, started the job by researching ancient Korean palaces before building the set. Even though it is an adventure genre like or , the production team showed much ambition to make a very Korean fantasy adventure film. The main building in the shape of a half moon is all covered with ivy. The faded brick that seems to have been worn out with time has decorative patterns engraved on them. And in front of the door, the stone statue of the phoenix, an animal in ancient legends, is guarding it. The 'R.U. Ready? House' that rose amidst the forest of Gapyong's Morning Calm Tree Garden was full of traditional Korean art from the overall concept to the small design pattern on the door. The patterns engraved on the wall of the 'R.U. Ready? House' or the key-shaped design, the ivy-covered building and the trees, the roof in the chimi(the decoration piece in the two end sides of the tiled roof) style draws out cries of wonder from the people who see them. Also, it is exotic as well as being peculiarly Korean. Moreover, the Art team is proud to admit that a synergetic effect was possible since the film's concept had something in common with Korea's own classic aesthetics. The maze pattern painted on the wall of the house significantly symbolizes the film story that the characters are soaked into the world of fantasy through this 'R.U.Ready? House'. And the key-shaped patterns seen in between represents their return to the real world through the 'R.U. Ready? House' after the characters who have been in the world of fantasy overcome their own nightmares. Even though the set that cost over 200 million won was dismantled as soon as the shooting was finished, the Korea Film Commission bought the whole set with a plan to re-build it in the Seoul Studio Complex in Yangseori.
Another set that the production team put much effort into was the open battlefield set. This was built at Sankraburi in the back country of Thailand and it was to re-create the Vietnam war which was the character Grandpa Hwang's nightmare is at. At a border region that was about 10 minutes from Miyanma, a banana plantation of 20,000 pyong was bought and about 250 million won was spent to build a set there. Trenches were dug out like spider webs on the borrowed mountain sides, the log house was remodeled, military barracks were built and thousands of banana trees were planted again to recreate the bloody battlefields of Vietnam of 30 years ago. The job was possible with the local staff's excellent skills. Sean Musikabut, the Art Director, is already international reputed as a professional in this area having participated in many foreign films already. The films he participated in are , , and <007 series>, to name a few. He is known as a veteran of Hollywood films regarding on location production in Thailand. With such expertise, he perfectly recreated the world of adventure in our imaginations by heading the major sets shot in Thailand such as the 1970s Vietnam war scene, the waterfall scene, and the cave scene in . |
