Having made a couple of mild successes with his two earlier films in the same year, Nagisa Oshima was given the green light to make this film by Shochiku Company, who saw the need to appeal to a younger generation audience. Oshima made the film in a clandestine manner, but its political contents caused fury in the administrative level of the company, and the assassination of a Socialist Party leader a few days after the film's release led to its withdrawal from circulation.
