| The best way to appreciate this movie is to take the disk out of the case and use it as a coaster or for target practice with your pellet gun (the hole makes an excellent bullseye). Next, take a long strip of cloth (your bathrobe sash will work) and close the snap case with one end in it so it won't pull out. Finally, take hold of the opposite end of the sash and flog yourself with the case as punishment for having wasted $20 on one of the crappiest excuses for a movie based on an historical event ever made. What was everyone thinking?! OK, Richard Boone and Mako are understandable because they're paycheck actors, but James Earl Jones, Toshiro Mifune and, yes, Sonny Chiba? The only one that wasn't slumming here was Laura Gemser (of Emanuelle fame). In fact her portrayal of the halfbreed, tomboy, warrior gal was downright inspired. Arthur Rankin Jr. produced this and it's clear he didn't stray far from the fantasy shows he made in the 60's ("Rudolph", "Frosty" and the magnificent "Mad Monster Party?") because this movie stretches reality and characters pretty thin. Sorry to be so brutal but this movie really deserves it. Even the equally awful, but mostly accurate "Shogun" ranks better than this and sitting through the 10+ hours of that is far less brutal than the 100 minutes of "Bushido Blade". |
