Lots of people love this movie. It is maudlin, and I'm sure politically acceptable. Yawn.

There is something about this movie that trancends just being another soulmate or true love story. The peasant girl who falls in love with the young teacher who has arrived in her village to educate the children in the rundown schoolhouse. His recall to the big city, her daily wait by the road for his return. Performances hit just the right note, cinematography is great. Like this low-key movie a lot.

A simple, utterly charming love story from one of the true masters of world cinema.

This movie is one of the most beautiful movies I have ever seen. The subject matter is in the hands of a master, but the acting and photography is also perfect. This is not a MANLY MAN'S movie; and if you like a good teary-eyed cry every now and then, then this film is for you. Sit back and watch it with a first date and you will be looked at in a different light by the guest.

The movie simply tells a story of love and how strong the forces of love can be if you trust in them. A MUST-SEE FILM for any fan of majestic love and passions. NOTE: this is not a sexual romance story. This is a story about the pains of longing for a person with true LOVE, not lust. Very pure and family safe.

Excellent Direction.

A very good film with a very touching story. Another great film by Zhang YiMou... superb photography and very good acting from the cast.

But I can't help thinking that this story doesn't have the substance of his other films and could be viewed simply as a showcase for Zhang Zi Yi! How much screen time did she get? :-)

Another Gong Li on the rise, definitely... but this film was definitely Zhang YiMou's push for his young starlette...
