Jackie follows up his groundbreaking 1983 pirate yarn with this excellent sequel--sadly without his two opera school brothers onboard, but still with great gusto and ingenuity as always.

While the first movie didn't have much swashbuckling action at sea to begin with, this one has nothing of the sort at all. We are firmly ashore here, with Jackie's character now working as a city cop toiling with corruption, political intrigue, and a bunch of crazy pirates seeking retribution. Storywise, the movie is a little cluttered. And some scenes tend to drag a bit. But Jackie's energy level, creativity and physical dexterity keep the proceedings entertaining and a lot of fun to watch. It is very different in style to the first one, mainly due to the fact that that was a Sammo-directed movie and this one is all Jackie, noticeable by lesser emphasis on fights and more on physical comedy, stunts, and elaborate set-ups. But that is not a bad thing.

What actual fight action there is, is of course great, especially the first rumble in the gangster den with Jackie and his cohorts going up against the likes of Chan Wai Man, Wang Lung Wei, and Fan Mei Shang. And the while the final showdown is more of a protracted chase scene with great gags and crazy stunts than an actual throwdown, it is still a grand spectacle of action and ingenuity that only the innovative mind of Jackie Chan could have conceived of.

The movie doesn't quite live up to the first one. But without the presence Sammo and Biao, that would have been difficult. Still, the combined efforts of Jackie, his stunt team, and the expansive cast makes this a wild and hugely entertaining ride that shouldn't be missed by JC and HK action fans alike.

Whenever I think of sequels that are just as good as the original, this is always the first movie that springs to mind. "Project A" is one of my all time favorite Jackie Chan movies (and kung-fu movies in general), so this movie had quite a shadow to escape from. But it manages with style to avoid going over the same beats as the original.

Granted it doesn't have much to do with the wacky Hong Kong Navy; instead it goes for drier ground with the corrupt Hong Kong Police Force. Throw in a dash of anti-Qing rebels, and a gaggle of inept pirates out for revenge, and you another instant Jackie Chan classic.

My favorite scene hands down is when everyone is hiding in Maggie Cheung's apartment--that is priceless. I've seen the movie half a dozen times and it still cracks me up.

Jackie Chan succeeds in making another fantastic movie that is totally accessible to anyone. You don't have to be a fan of kung-fu to love this movie.

"Project A 2" is an amazing achievement from Jackie Chan. I often watch this flick a lot because the fights were excellent and the gags were well done. The ending fight scene alone is worth the price. A great movie!

One of Jackie Chan's best films.

NOTE: This review refers to the HK DVD from Mega Star.

This film is one of my faves! It has good music (which JC sung himself, obviously) and great action-packed stunts!

Jackie is without his brothers Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao in this sequel, but he still manages to amaze the audience. Project A II contains the trademark action scenes and comedy that define Jackie Chan. The finale of the movie is worth the price alone, as Jackie showcases some spectacular stunts only he can do (along with short martial arts fight scenes here and there) such as tumbling down a structure-like building made of bamboo, falling into a pool of weaved baskets, gobbling down handfuls of red hot peppers (I consider it a stunt, because hey, not many are willing to do it), running down the face of a ceremonial facade as it's falling over, and another ceremonial facade tumbling down right onto him only to be saved by standing right under one of the window-like squares.

Although many argue that the first of the Project A series is better in every category, Project A II shouldn't be looked down on or overlooked. It is worth every penny as the first.
