WARNING!!! BEWARE OF THE DIMENSION DVD EDITION!!!

INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT A:

Jackie Chan is a genius, the historical importance of his legacy transcends his best known image as a comedian and daredevil acrobat: There's a talented Director and visionary, a man who changed the Action film industry in Honk Kong forever with his personal touch and style in the early 80's, by creating the perfect fusion of goofy physical comedy and incredible restless action with some of the most impressive and dangerous stunts ever displayed on film. This 1982 film was the consolidation of Chan as a star in Asia after his major breakthrough with Yuen Woo Ping's kung fu classic "Drunken Master", and a movie that started an influence to follow from there on.

A true Milestone and considered by critics not only as the first important Honk Kong action comedy , but one of the best productions of the genre next to Chan's second best directed film, the timeless classic "Police Story". Besides being one of his most entertaining and funny movies, the film contains some of Jackie's best stunts ever. We've all seen the reckless and almost imprudent Asian stuntmen falling on their heads and backs from the roof to the solid floor in many occasions in 80's HK action movies, but no one can get used to watch Jackie climbing handcuffed to a flag pole, jumping to the top of a clock tower, and then falling to the ground with no protection but a couple of cloth roof tops. And he did it at least three times, two of them registered in this film. Even the MTV idiots getting their nipples bitten by baby alligators, think that is totally insane. Outstanding comedy and action, great period scenarios, enjoyable classic soundtrack: This movie defines an era.

So Jackie became a huge international star and Americans embraced this delightful character and action hero that he is, and the came the re-release of his early and most important work to satisfy the needs of us fans. Among those DVD releases, unfortunately we can find editions like this one. Check this out:

THE PROBLEMS:

- Incomplete, cut version with English dubbing, and the worst of all, the original amusing and perfectly synchronized music score was replaced by a new, awful synthesized random score, killing the comedy and sucking the joy out of the movie by trying to turn it into the current action flick.

- The Classic Golden Harvest presentation and original opening sequence with credits, was replaced by a computer generated pirate flag : Jackie Chan's Project A, the new title, makes clear that this release is a mere vehicle to show Jackie to new audiences, with no respect for anything else.

- The bar fight sequence is incomplete: The whole "spaghetti" incident was excluded. Nice.

- The scene in the gambling house in which the Sammo Hung character is introduced to the movie, was completely excluded. Now, he just happens to know everyone. Awesome.

- From the Police training sequence, the "shower" scene is missing.

- The intro of Sammo, Jackie and Yuen Biao in the arrest sequence at the club house is missing. The fight sequences are chopped off too.

- The intro of the rifle robbery on a boat at night perpetrated by Sammo and Jackie, conceived as a Peking Opera satire, is chopped off and ruined by the lack of score, wasting the rhymes and the joke intended.

- The pirate assault to the English ship sequence, chopped off.

- From then, everything is in place, till the new ending credits. By this time, only sadness for the lost original music score and impotence for the wasted money remains.

Honestly, the picture and sound are decent. But that's it. The intention of this DVD edition is to introduce new audiences to Jackie's glorious past, and in that part only, it delivers. But this is not the final choice for any collector or faithful fan, not for a moment.

THE SOLUTION:

A couple years ago, FORTUNE STAR released a flawless remastered ALL-REGION DVD Edition, including the complete version in Cantonese DTS, 5.1, and original 2.0 mono soundtrack (Hurrah!) with original character voices and music score, all the deleted scenes and outtakes, original HK trailer, and photo galleries. More than any fan could ask for, I tell you.

My second favorite Jackie Chan movie right behind "Drunken Master 2". It's Jackie Chan at his fighting peak along with Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. One of the best things about this movie is the wanton destruction of just about every set you see in the movie. Tons of fun for any fan of kung fu.

This is a fairly enjoyable flick, with Chan's trademark humor evident throughout--lthough it's not as silly as many of his other movies. I like this a thousand times better then the dreadful "Wheels on Meals".

The first of the great Chan, Hung, Biao three headers. And a groundbreaking film for HK cinema in terms of vision, scale and overall production value. The chemistry between the three former opera school buddies is great. And the comedy bits are pretty funny.

The fights are good, but not the three dragons' best efforts in my opinion (but that's still better than most everything else).

Considering it's a pirate movie, I would really have liked to see the guys doing some Errol Flynn swashbuckler type stuff out on the open sea (well, the open sea being Clearwater Bay), but that was not to be.

Anyway, there is still lots of great action and hilarious hijinx to be enjoyed here, such as the bicycle chase and the infamous clocktower fall.

So, all in all, another classic must-have.

This is probably my favorite martial arts film ever! It stars Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. This was the film that made Jackie Chan, and it's not hard to see why. A mix of great fights, amazing stunts, and a fun story. Jackie performs one of his best stunts: a fall from a three story clock tower. Also the wondeful bike chase is amazing and features some daring stunts. Sammo Hung is also great and delivers great action and comedy--his kick on Dick Wei at the end has to be watched many times! Yuen Biao, who is my faviroute martial arts actor, is amazing as he delivers great kicks and flips. The bad guys are amazing too, we have Dick Wei ("Five Venoms", "My Lucky Stars", "Rosa") as the pirate captain, and he delivers amazing kicks as he was a taekowndo teacher to the Taiwanese army. Lee Hoi San ("Magnificent Butcher", "Descendants Of Wing Chun") dosn't get as much action, but has a good fight with Jackie in the clock tower. Also another taekwondo expert, Kwan Young Moon, plays a pirate and has a short but sweet kicking fight with Yuen Biao. Special mention goes to John Cheung, Mars, Tai Bo, and everyone involved with this amazing film. You have to buy this film!

A classic movie. The clock tower fall scene by Jackie was a climax considering how dangerous it was. The fight scenes were not the best for a movie at that time, but overall, a well done movie. I especially enjoyed the fight scene with Jackie and Sammo in the open restaurant, notably that 3 point kick performed by Jackie rather quickly. I should add the music score was good and the theme music was very catchy.

This was Jackie's first modern movie, and probably his best. Jackie performs stunts that were unknown to the world at the time, and he does them as well or better then ever done before. This is the first of the "Three Brothers" films, which feature Jackie with his Peeking Opera Classmates, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

I will sadly admit that the first half-hour of this film is pretty dull and unexciting. Normally, I would take off some points for that, but trust me, the rest of the flick more than makes up for it!!! After enduring some painful scenes of "coast guard" life, Jackie soon reverts to butt-kicking form. Jackie is certainly the star of this film. Sammo has less screen time, and Yuen seems to be in an extened cameo. Which is too bad, as the combination of all 3 is one of the highlights of Cinema.

Anyway, the things that stand out in this film are the bicycle chase, the legendary clock tower scene, and the dozens of fights that break out during this film.

Project A is the first Jackie Chan movie to feature him in a semi-modern world; an action movie, not just a kung fu flick. Although the film has many exciting fight scenes, it's also the first Jackie Chan film to showcase his stunts (different angles, slow motions... almost like a documentary). His fall from the face of the clock tower through two awning to land on the ground is legendary. The chase scene in which he rides a bicycle through the narrow Hong Kong back alleys demonstrates his acrobatic skill at its finest. Of course, one must not forget the other characters in the movie: the ever so chunky Sammo Hung (who currently directed Jackie's "Mr. Nice Guy" last year) and very acrobatic Yuen Biao (remember him in "Once Upon a Time in China"?). The chemistry between the three of them is as always spectacular. Very entertaining movie, although at times confusing mainly due to the poor subtitles and the video quality (If you understand Cantonese, the former probably is not a problem for you). If you were lucky enough to have seen this film letterboxed or in theater, I'm very jealous of you.

This is one great movie. It has wild stunts (Jackie falls off a clock and falls to the ground; he does this 3 times and I think one time he falls on his neck), bar room fighting(over 20 minutes worth), very funny comedic scenes (you have to watch the scene where Jackie rides the bicycle through the alleys with henchmen chasing him; its hilarious), and a fabulous fight scene at the end where Jackie, Sammo, and Yuen (the "3" brothers) fight pirates, and destroy their hideout.

This is one of my favorites (along with DM2). It's a wild comedic adventure you'll never forget.

A true classic from action master Jackie Chan. This man performs some stunts that nobody will ever believe. In this film, Jackie plays Dragon Ma, a wiseacre who works for the border patrol sailors, but they soon have to disband to join the police force in order to catch some wanted pirates. Connected to the plot are some of the most incredible fights and stunts ever shot on film, including a great bicycle chase and the fall from the clocktower that could have seriously hurt or killed Jackie Chan. That is what this man puts himself through to please his loyal fans. A must see picture!

Project A marks a break from Chan's typical kung fu flicks. Jackie plays the part of a coast gaurd officer. He personally takes on the task of fidding the seas of pirates and does so with a flare of humor as usual. The fights were good but not spectacular by way of comparison. I liked the movie for its humor and action, but I could get more real kung fu from most of his earlier work. However, the stunts were pretty spectacular and I would reccomend this movie to any Chan fan who enjoys the versatile that Jackie has to offer.

A great film, Project A has it all, the plot thickens as characters develop, and each thug is as real as his fighting skills (i.e. impressive) This film showcases the skills of Chan and his peking opera buddies, Samo and Yuen, and doesn't pull any punches from the script to get there. I loved the fact that this film kept going for a good 20 minutes, after a spectacular stunt that I thought was the cap to the final sequence, and that each and every brawl improved all the way through to the end. I only wish I could get my hands on a dubbed version of the film. Even if you can't you should go see it!

This movie starts the Jackie Chan Genre. He introduces his new brawling style which is only seen to believe. His first movie in the semi-modern world. His first movie with guns. His first movie with a stunt. And his first movie with an action sequence. This film was very experimental and luckily turned out good. He starts with a massive chaotic barroom brawl using tables and chairs. A couple of fights hold up the movie. One would be in this dining room restaurant place where he swings from a chandelier. He also teams up with Sammo Hung in a very short fight. Finally the stunt sequence where Chan climbs up a flagpole then jumps off. Amazing! Unbelievable! But that just prepares for the very painful clock tower fall. Very very cool, but one shot should have done it. WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING WHEN DOING THE FALL THREE TIME! THATS CRAZY!!! THATS STUPID!!! SOMEONE JUST TELL ME WHY! But hey, it looked good on the screen. I couldn't resist saying "Ouch, that must have hurt" during a fall showed in the outtakes. The thing that I like most about the film is the bicycle chase in the narrow allows. Superbly choreographed. It's the best 2 minutes out of all Chan films. It's comical too. Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao didn't add the goodness I expected. They did help the movie a bit at the end, but the end doesn't have my jaw drop or my eyes glued to the screen. One thing unexpected is the mild violence. For a Jackie Chan film, it's weird seeing up close shots of people bieng stabbed with swords.

In this wet and wild outing, Jackie puts on skimpy sailor suit and enjoys getting himself handcuffed, climbing large poles, rolling around with big, sweaty pirates with nipple rings, and....

Woah, wher'd THAT come from?!!? EEEEEEWWWWWW! I gotta take a shower now.

Despite the homoerotic undertones (real or imagined), this is the kinda Jackie Chan movie that you'd sell a vital internal organ to see in it's original theatrical form (I'll sell one of my livers. I can get by with one). This is also the kind of Jackie Chan movie that makes me proud to be alive in a day and age when we humans, as a species, can appreciate such a fine quality film as this. First Strike, although fun in spots, is now to me nothing more than dried fecal matter between the toes of this movie. Jackie was obviously in TOP form for this picture, as were the other 2 "Little Fortunes". That head pirate is one wild lookin' freak, but how would YOU know, unless you saw the film, in which case you shouldn't even NEED to be reading this, so what the hell are you doing here anyway, huh, you lookieloo; you rubbernecking bastard, you're holding up net traffic somewhere, and you couldn't care less, could you, you cretin! GO BACK TO OREGON!

Lesson to be learned in this Mutha of all Sailor Movies: Just because they wear those uniforms doesn't mean they're gay; then again...... (Hey you! Please don't send me death threats. I'm only kidding. Lemme see a smile. Thaaaats better.)

Two things, and two things only prevent this movie from getting a perfect 10/10: the story's moments of incomprehensibility and the substandard interaction between the 3 brothers. Since this movie is so crammed with action sequences, a few extra scenes that clarify the plot wouldn't have hurt it in the least. And, although Jackie and Samo have a few scenes together, Yuen Biao (a.k.a. The Perpetual Underdog)'s talents are wasted in an insignificant role as a cop. If I had watched this movie without knowing that he was in it, I probably wouldn't have noticed him. Aside from these flaws, PROJECT A is pure gold. Many a fine brawl erupts that is loaded with whole new types of pain. Just watching some of them is enough to jar your preserves. Filter the dookie out of all the waste excreted by the stuntmen and you could start your own blood bank. My personal favorite was the fight in the V.I.P. club populated by tight-assed, elitist shit-fucks who probably piss seltzer and have lurid dreams in which wealthy young women shed one of their seventeen layers of clothing before waking up with a perfectly dreadful bead of perspiration soiling their imported blankets or their pampered skin. I hate rich people ("and when I finally become a rich person, I'm gonna hate poor people. It's the American way." -Kirstie Alley from one of the last episodes of CHEERS). And speaking of which, did anybody else notice the striking similarity between the PROJECT A scene in which Jackie opens the door to his office to find everyone clustered around it, eavesdropping on him and the CHEERS scene in which Sam opens the door to his office to find everyone clustered around it, eavesdropping on him? Either the CHEERS writers pulled a Spielberg or they share a trans-oceanic, psychic rapport with Jackie and don't know it. Anyway, see the damn movie. Bad things will happen to you if you don't.

This is one of the best three brothers film i ever saw. It could of only been Yuen and Jackie but they stuck Sammo in there for little parts. Three brothers film always means more insane action than ordinary Jackie Chan movies. Jackie shows his great stunt skills. Yuen Shows his acrobatic-kung-fu skills. And Sammo shows.........shows........ummmmmm......some kung fu skills.

I think Sammo could of done more fight scenes. He was envolved with alot of fight scenes but had little time to do what he gots. Anyways, the fights were much more realistic and funny. The movie was scattered with fight scenes every where so that you wouldn't feel bored any second of the movie. My favorite fight scene in the movie is when Jackie and Yuen is fighting at this fat guy's hideout place. Don't it just look painful when jackie threw that iron statue of at the fat guy's cheast? In his new movie ''Jackie Chan: My Story'' there was a part where he said it took him 7 days for him to complete the clock fall scene. In the interview he said that he was scared so he had to hang on the clock until he was tired enough to let go and fall. My question is, if he was scared, why the hell did he did it 3 times!?

Well, this film is fun to watch. By the way I notice Mars did his own stunts too. Wonder what happend to Mars?

Ugh. Got this one, and it was one of the most horrendous, worst Jackie Chan film I had ever seen. I literally forced myself to finish this one. I'm sure it has it's good parts, but I gave it a good once-over and it did nothing for me. Provided it had Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, it was totally worthless. The movie is totally uneventful until the very end, when they infiltrate the big bad pirates lair. Even the end fight didn't seem all that great. My favorite part (the only good part in my opinion) was when Jackie let his bike ghost-ride into the bike racks at the Coast Guard academy (or wherever it was). By the way, don't read into any hype about "the greatest bar-room brawl ever composed on film". I've seen better fights/action in Road House with Patrick Swayze!

Project A is without a doubt one of Jackie's finest. The movie rolls from one well done action scene to another, and stuck in between are comic bits that one can actually laugh with, instead of corny slapstick that is sometimes seen in Jackie's movies. Every single fight/action scene is everything you would come to expect from a good JC movie. The stunts are outrageous and from a certain point funny, but than at the same time amazing and very original, enough to make you get down on your knees and start chanting "I'm not worthy." Not a dull moment passes in this movie that's packed with unbelievable stunts and fights. They don't get much better than this. A must see for any JC fan!

Aaahhhhhh.........another great movie directed by the man, Jackie Chan. This movie was awesome, not many other words can describe how good it is. One of the best. The movie certainly was a different turn for Jackie, he's a sailor this time.....interesting role to say the least. Man....this movie has it all. did I mention that it had the great Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao? The fights in this one are fantastic, Jackie fighting Yuen Baio, Jackie and Sammo fighting a big group or men, Jackie fighting more bad guys..........well, you get the picture. This is a movie that has lots of fights in it. It also features lots of Jackie's trademark humor(no way!). Overall, a great movie, but there are already too many reviews on this darn page so I can't say anymore or I would be taking other people's lines.

This, the first of the excellent 'three brothers' films, is one of my favourite JC movies. The stunts are big, the fights are excellent and there is a decent plot (which also proves that a period film can be made with no need for a shaolin temple or the likes). The bar room brawl lives up to it's reputation, the bicycle chase is uncomparable, the final fight with Jackie, Samo and Yuen Biao vs. 'Pirate Sam' was very well done and the password scene was god-damn hilarious "A dumb man asks a lama for a trumpet. The lama doesn't understand and gives him a pumpkin..." Although in some places it is a little boring, the very best of the 'three brothers' films and one of Jackie Chan's finest cinematic masterpieces.

WOW!!! Despite everything I read about this film, I was still not prepared for it's absolute perfection. The action advances the plot, the plot and characters motivate the comedy, and the comedy enhances the action. Kudos go to Edward Tang for the screenplay and double kudos to Jackie Chan for both co-writing the screenplay and directing the film. The pacing is flawless, there isn't a wasted moment in the entire movie!

While Jackie is undoubtedly the star, Samo Hung and Yuen Biao get plenty of opportunity to display their considerable talents. This movie has a barroom fight that will ruin you for Westerns forever! I was especially interested in the now-famous clock tower scene since I saw Jackie explain how he shot it in Jackie Chan, My Story. Apparently, he decided to have the stunt team let him hang there until he actually couldn't hold on anymore! Who know Jackie used The Method??? My God! Did he actually fall on his head?!? Twice!?!

Just one word about the tape I bought from Advantage Video. It's a 'Venom Video', dubbed in English (with German subtitles - go figure!). The picture quality is first rate and most of the dubbing is very good, but they decided to use Chinese voices for some of the characters, notably Samo Hung, and they were extremely hard to understand. Boy, did I wish I knew German! I have no problem with Samo on Martial Law, but it took a couple tries to understand everything his 'stunt-dubber' was saying. I'd suggest you'd be better off with subtitles, but I'm currently in the middle of trying to work my way thru Project A II, also by Advantage and the subtitles are HORRENDOUS!! (Apparently Americans are part psychic and can read tiny white letters on a white background, while those poor, non-psychic Germans need large letters edged in black so they're visible on any background!) Whatever you decide, you MUST buy, rent or borrow this movie. You're not a Jackie Chan fan without seeing it!

Overrated is a word that springs to mind when watching this comic swashbuckling kung fu flick. I found the first 40 mins very boring with very average fight scenes and a silly bar brawl. The person dubbing Jackie's voice didn't fit the character at all and it was often hard to make out what the actors were saying. The last hour of the film was excellent and it was worth renting just to see the "bike chase" (and the scenes leading up to it) alone. Overall, a decent Jackie flick which is worth seeing a few times until you die of boredom.

NOTE: This review refers only to the USA Version, which was very heavily edited and changed from the original.

I agree with Tom's review. This DVD version is but a pale shadow of the original HK movie. The original soundtrack, which actually played a very large part in the comic timing of the movie, has been completely jettisoned for badly-composed generic string strains. The dialogue has been completely retranslated so that entire scenes no longer convey their original meaning. Those scenes that are still present, that is, for many scenes have been cut entirely as well. Perhaps most offensive of all, the voice acting is all done by non-Asian actors pretending to have bad Asian accents.

I give this version of the movie half a star [out of 5] because Jackie Chan's physical comedy still exists, albeit in butchered form. Import this, get it off eBay, but please, please, please do not buy this version of Project A.

NOTE: This review refers only to the USA Version, which was very heavily edited and changed from the original.

Dimension has done well tweaking other Jackie Chan movies for the US, but Project A is a horrible misrepresentation of the original.

The running time is more like 97 minutes than the advertised 105. Missing are most of the jokes and H.K. charm. The music score has also been replaced by what seems to be wind effects, and it really drags down the remnants of this movie. The original was bright and fun; this release is simply dreary by comparison.

Please, Dimension, recall this disc and give us the original.

It is Hong Kong at the turn of the century. Jackie's detachment of Marine Police have made a dismal mess of trying to capture the most notorious pirates that infest the China Sea. Little do they know there is a traitor in their midst. A rivalry develops between Jackie's group and the Land Police over this mission, culminating in the most spectacular bar room brawl ever filmed. Eventually the two rival groups talents of Jackie Chan with those of Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, and has made box-office history wherever it has played.
