Often described as Hong Kong's response to "Gone With The Wind", this two-part epic, set during the tumultuous years of World War II, is my favorite movie of all time. I think it is better than "Gone With the Wind". Then again, I think all the Chinese movies are...

"The Blue And The Black" is a love story that takes place during World War II. It stars the one and only Lin Die, and the crazy part about it is that right after the film took place she committed suicide in real life, so the movie was very famous because it does have a second part. It is a love story about a young woman who is considered to be an orphan even though she lives with her grandmother, because her real parents are dead. Because of this, and her beauty, she is considered to be an outcast. Her home life is very out of wack, as she lives under strict rules and is very often punished. The story starts off at some party where she makes eye contact with this very sensitive but very cute and charming man. From there it was love at first sight. They ended up having a night of ice skating, and decided from there that they were in love. As most of the family agrees that the two make a great couple, granny is dead set against it. It ends up that they meet up secretly and the the guy gets beat up and Lin takes him home and spends all night taking care of him. When she arrives home her granny goes nuts and decides to lock her in. And when he awakens the next day, he is told that he is not to see her either. With him being sensitive and all, he goes nuts without her, and she ends up leaving him and and going to nursing school and getting a place. When she confronts him to pack his stuff, he chickens out.

The movie has a lot of going back and forth with the two and it ends with a cliffhanger where he goes off to fight the Japanesse. So I just ordered part 2 and will let you all know the second I finish watching. It is a beautiful story, it made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. It is a collectible and is definitely worth adding to your collection. It is my favorite movie.
