| This has to be one of if not the best 'bad' kung fu movie I have ever seen. I picked this up about 5 years ago in one of those bargain packs on VHS EP. No lying I wore out 2 copies before I finally purchased it on DVD. When I have a bunch of people over for a long night of kung fu movie watching this always goes in.
The plot really isn't that bad. The acting is some of Carter Wong's best (for what it's worth). For the time it was made, the special effects aren't really too bad either, although comparable to most 50's stock horror...and about being trippy.
I don't think you could watch this film for more than ten minutes without having to double take what just happened. It also contains the best "oh crap" scene ever seen in a kung fu movie. When Carter Wong throws his knife to end the conflict with the evil snake spirit and it is caught I couldn't stop laughing and still laugh every time I see it. The end fight isn't to shabby minus the fact that it comes (like most points in the movie) seemingly out of nowhere.
If you are looking for a sprawling epic of magical proportions, look else where. But if you want to see some kung fu/magic 'bad' action look no further. Imagine the Miracle Fighters that takes itself way too seriously. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars [out of 5] is because...well it's bad. Be warned but you will enjoy it. |
