| "Money Crazy" is a humorous delight. Richard Ng stars as a swindler who blackmails rich people. Ricky Hui co-stars as a schmo who works hard and gets trampled by his wealthy employers. His bosses also have bad luck around him. He's a sort of a jinx who never has any luck either. After his latest firing, Ricky and Richard meet each other under bizarre circumstances and decide to team up with one another and pull off a major scam with Ricky's current employer. Can the two do the gig without killing each other in the process?
This film was made during John Woo's comedic period. He was a sort of a Woody Allen type of filmmaker who filmed a lot of slapstick comedies with Ricky Hui as a frequent collaborator. The two meet when he was an art director on the Hui brothers comedy classic "The Private Eyes". The action scenes were director by another Woo collaborator, Hark Fung-On. Lee Hoi Sang (another Woo regular) as a part as a hired goon who dresses up as a Golden Shaolin Warrior! Lam Ching Ying and Dick Wei have small parts as well.
This is a very funny film that has to be seen. One of the highlights of this movie has to be the homage to Rififi (also replayed in Mission Impossible)--in ordered to avoid detection from an elaborate burglar alarm, Richard Ng has to hang upside down with his feet bound from the celling in order to steal a diamond broach!
Classic stuff, highly recommended! |
