ABOUT THE DIRECTOR:
Born in 1923, Xie Jin is China's veteran filmmaker active before, during, and after the Cultural Revolution. Considered by many as "elder statesman" of Chinese cinema, Xie confirmed his status with "The Opium War" (1997), an epic and one of the most expensive pictures in Chinese history made to welcome Hong Kong's return to the motherland.

The oeuvre of director Xie Jin, perhaps more than any other single mainland Chinese filmmaker, presents a guide to the first half century of PRC cinema. From his directorial debut in the early 1950s and throughout the ensuing five decades, his movies span political movements and artistic trends, with such titles as "Red Detachment Of Women" (1960) and "Two Stage Sisters" (1964) among the list of Chinese classics.
