The Eye: Viewer Comments

I sat down to watch this movie in the dark, I was excited about being scared, because I had heard so much about it, it did not live up to any of the hype.

The production quality is reasonable, and the picture quality is wonderful, but that's about it. Watch the aforementioned American films that came first, all on the same night, and you've saved yourself 25 bucks on purchasing a rather boring, forgettable film.

The director (Pang brothers) had spent an immense amount of attention on colors, angles, and every other horror film editing that's up to date. The scenes matches very well with the soundtrack, and the acting for all the key scenes are top notch. (Can't say much for some of the other casts.)

If you don't know much about this movie, great. Spend the money and just watch it. It'll be a long, long time until another horror movie this good get released in the theatres.

This film is scary only if you watch it on your own. I had watched it with a group of my pals (13 of us to be exact) and a whole bunch of easily freaked out people to complete the audience. I had entered the cinema late by 10 minutes though, after waiting for a few of the later ones to turn up (two girls and one boy).

Anyway, it was quite sad to see the main character (names escape me) while she studied herself in the mirror. Call me sentimental. I saw a moral in this story (never take anything you have for granted) and I almost decided this movie wasn't going to be so bad. It wasn't...until it was long over.

When the main character walks out into a corridor, her newfound vision is still blur since her eyes take some getting used to. Then a series of moans emit from the other end of the corridor, and it's and old woman in the inpatient 'uniform'. The old lady (quite obviously a ghost by now) complains that she is cold, then after a whirl around the main character, disappears and leaves her completely confused. *Nervous laughter from the audience, and a loud and clear scream from one of my friends that might have earned her a advertising salary.*

The scariest part is when the girl is in the lift and a disfigured ghost of a man turns around and floats forward until he is just behind her. The audience's screams (as well as my friends') and my trying not to look at the face of the old uncle left me in fits of laughter. The funniest part of the movie would only be evident if you understand Chinese dialects. When the Main character and her psychiatrist arrive at a hospital in Siam to look up info on the eye-donor, the hospital has 'Siam' as part of it's name, but 'Siam', which is supposed to be the country, is misinterpreted as a dialect word for 'get lost.'

This film has a romantic theme to it...somewhere, as the psychiatrist (whose looks would fit better in an album of male models for Giorgio Armani) ends up falling in love with the main character. The conclusion of the show is that just when the main character is getting used to her supernatural sight, she foresees a disaster on a congested road, as did the previous owner of the eye's cornea foresee a similar incident in her home village. The woman leaves her seat on the bus (meaning that she left the psychiatrist behind as well) and tries to get everyone to leave their cars as the accident-involved gas-tanker truck had sprung a leak. She and the psychiatrist survive the resulting explosion, but some of the debris got into her eyes and...she became blind again. The ending commentary is that she, all in all, treasured the moments she had with her sight, and her psychiatrist had become her boyfriend.

After it was all said and done, my friends and I all left the cinema laughing, but later that night I couldn't sleep. Later one of my friends admitted that she was afraid that she would have visions that her room would transform into another one as it did in the show.

Conclusion: Nice movie. Scary, laughable, and leaves one heck of an impact in your mind that would last at least...one week.
