ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
Yuesheng Lu, Kam-Wing Wong and Siu-Gwan Yuen had a closed relationship because they all had attended the revolution against National Government. Lu has established himself as the overload of Shanghai. He thought of going into banking. When the loading banker demurs, Lu organized a run on his bank. He decided in favor of high society. No more opium smoking. When the Japanese attacked China, Lu dedicated a strong commitment to the country and met a top opera diva Siu Dung. But he had to go to Hong Kong because the death toll is appalling at the time. The war was over. Lu came back to Shanghai, but China is coming under communism. He was frustrated so that he moved to Hong Kong with his family...

ALTERNATE SYNOPSIS:
From the late 1920s to the early 1930s, Yusheng has established himself as the overlord of Shanghai. He's in politics, business, and--above all-the huge underworld. But he is generous to a fault. Many sponge on him, and his finances are strained. Yusheng thinks of going into banking. When the loading banker demurs, Yusheng organizes a run on his bank. The bankers have to bow to him. Then comes the transformation. He decides in favor of high society. No more opium smoking. But a strong commitment to the country. In 1937 the Japanese attack Shanghai, only to be resisted by the Nationalists and Yusheng's irregulars. The death toll is appalling. Yusheng who then has won back top opera diva Meng is almost killed. He has to go to Hong Kong...
