Hong Kong films are not afraid to mix genres. Daughter of Darkness is several films in one: a police comedy, a splatter shocker, a soft-core sex film, and a serious drama about family abuse. All of them are well done, but if you watch this expecting to be titillated, you'll be disappointed, because Lily Chung is such a good actress that you will sympathize with her character too much to enjoy any of the awful things that are done to her. Even the lengthy consensual sex scene is strangely unsexy in the context of the abuse plot, and it's the one scene that feels gratuitous.

If all the plots had been played as comedy, this would have been brilliant. It's still one of the better HK category 3 films, and the ending is excellent.

Category 3. It is what it is. Sex and violence mixed with bits of humor. I dig it. It's not high class cinema. It's shock cinema. It aims to please the lowest standards of human entertainment. It features aspects of horror, drama, romance, and comedy being wildly juggled for your amusment (or lack there of). It's got rape, murder, and Anthony Wong (hell yeah!). That aside it's standard Cat 3 material. Someone is, or feels, wronged and they get revenge. Not for your average viewer.

Oh No! Not ANTHONY WONG (the demented star of EBOLA SYNDROME and THE UNTOLD STORY) in yet another Category 3 sickie?! I honestly think the man loves these kinds of films. What kind of films, you ask? Oh, you know, the ones that make the argument whether it's to be considered a "movie" or just plain trashy filth intended for trashy filthy minds of trashy filthy people. The kind that has NO, and I mean, NO redeeming qualities what-so-ever at all anywhere in the movie! Those repulsive, sick, disgusting "I don't think I should be watching this... but I have to!" kind of movies. Yeah, you know, the ones we LOVE sooo much! Well, this IS one and away we go with the review... good old, HK sleaze-ball, ANTHONY WONG plays a bumbling small town cop (he's surprisingly not the "bad guy" this time around) who's trying to figure out the excessively moist murder of a local family. Come to find out, it was the daughter (actress LILY CHUNG), who had been beaten, raped, and blackmailed by her father (this actor's portrayal of the totally wacko fella is just outrageous and probably the only real shining part of the whole film). And after witnessing what exactly happened (as it's told through her confession), I can say they all pretty much had it coming to 'em! But unfortunately, even with these graphic scenes of sadistic carnage, the movie itself is pretty lame with lots of bad acting, lots of bad slapstick, lots of terrible music, lots of nothing happening in the first hour, and it's only the actual story that she tells that has the "juicy" parts like lots of gratuitous nudity, lots of softcore sex, lots of exaggerated inhuman violence, and lots of that lovely red substance that shows up so well on white. But be honest, just admit it, that's why you're here in the first place, right? So, stay awake through the first half (I know it'll be hard to do) and you'll see just what happens when a father and daughter relationship goes sour (the Hong Kong way, that is).
