Crappy movie, but the sheer insanity of the gore and the fights completely makes it worthwhile of a B-movie lover's pursuit. Do it!

Next to Peter Jackson's "Braindead", this is surly one of the goriest movies of the 90's. The legendary "head crush" scene will leave gore hounds pleased.

A fantastic manga live action film.

Ricky is sent to prison for killing a drug dealer who attacked his girlfriend. Ricky tries to keep to himself, but thanks to the cruel warden and goons, Ricky fights for his life and the lives of the other inmates.

I'm always up for a solid gorefest with some humor, and this surely did deliver. It won't win any awards for acting or best original story, but who cares? It should definitely please the audience it was aimed at, which is people who read the manga, gorehounds, people with a sense of humor, like prison films, enjoy martial arts, and want to see something other the the normal garbage Hollywood produces.

It's a fun film for a rainy evening and can be even more fun when you pause the film to look at the cartoonish dummies used before the inevitable...SPLAT! Good fun! Thumbs up!

I bought this title with the sole purpose of watching hard muscles flexing. And I did get what I wished for!

Fan Siu Wong was topless for almost the entire movie, either fighting or flexing his muscles. You can see him chained up too!

And there were scenes of him clad in hot shorts, showing off his well muscled thighs, which is a bonus!

The story is about Ricky, who is subjugated for punching a guy's head in (literally) over an incident that affected the life of Ricky's girlfriend. Ricky, with supreme kung fu, now must survive within a very corrupt prison system with five malignant gangster leaders, the warden who can metamorphose into a silly monster, his gluttonous fat son and also help the inferior prisoners.

The reason why this is one of my all time favorite films is because it portrays what I like in cinema: a film that acts serious but doesn't take itself seriously at the same time--an example being that the film's story is very dramatic but the action is overdone in terms of sarcasm, asininity and over-the-top gore. The fact that someone can punch a hole in someone else's body is downright funny and entertaining. And the fact that some of the FX are evidently facecious give it its prime enjoyment. The gore level in this film is at "Dead Alive's" level. Nam Nai Choi, one of my all time favorite directors, could have been the next Herschell Gordon Lewis or Lucio Fulci, but unfortuantely his film carrer ended with the all so entertaining film THE CAT which was made after RICKY.

Gore film fans will like it, but people who are infatuated with anything relevant towards Hollywood and big budget films will hate it, as well as people who prefer films to be fast-paced, because this film sort of lacks pacing. But then again who cares? BEST FILM EVER!!

YDefinitely agree with you "The Story of Ricky" is a cult classic that has high replay value, and could be enjoyed by non martial arts fans. Great date movie ... for me anyway ? Black Dragon

I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, but it sure did deliver the cheesy goods! Bloody over-the-top cartoon violence, hilariously bad subtitled dialogue, goofy special effects, blood and body parts flying everywhere...what more could you want?

Super low budget kung fu/gore/comedy based on the manga. This is what "Dead Alive" would've been like if Peter Jackson were from Hong Kong. Exceptionally bloody finale with an unreal volume of splatter.

Many people didn't like this, but I thought that the film was awesome. Louis Fan (AKA Fan Siu Wong) is great as Ricky, and it's crazy to see how creatively, insanely gory the action is in this film. If you don't like gore then skip this immediately, because this is one of the most gory and over the top action flicks ever made. I thought it was awesome, but your opinions may differ.

Man, I wish the director of this movie Nam Nai Choi ("Seventh Curse") was still around making movies! He is my top-5 favorite directors of all time! "Story Of Ricky" is definitely one of the goriest films ever made! It ranks with Peter Jackson's "Dead Alive" among others! The fights were awesome and the story is original!

I originally heard about this film back in 97 in a book called Sex & Zen and a Bullet in the Head and I was absolutely determined to track this gem down and see it. But the only copy I found for rent wasnt dubbed or subbed, so I had to wait damn near 6 years to finally see it and it was worth it. I'm not gonna be redundant and explain the plot like others here have already done but instead give you my pros and cons on this incredible flick.

pros:

  • great colors and lighting which gives it this
  • sorta comic book/anime effect
  • exceptional gore and tortue scenes
  • great villians
  • funny ass dubbed dialogue"he told Rikki about the poopies!"
  • funny ass characters(especially the jailhouse snitch character who wets himself when scared)
  • great comic book style fights sequences
  • excellent pacing
  • trashy musical score

Cons:

  • Why the name changes on the dubbed track?
  • Awkward pauses at the beginning of the film when the prisoners are being checked in(they coulda at least included the intros subtitled on the non-english tracks as well)
  • No prison b1tches-Look, I know chinese prisons arent run like Oz, hell-most US prisons arent run like that either but c'mon, whats a prison movie with no prison b1tches? For awhile I thought that tongueless kid might be but nope. Not even that cute chauncey lookin' villain was but at least he had good kung fu skills so maybe that explains it.
  • They didnt even try using that lil' fat kid. If he was anything like his pa he woulda beat Rikki retarded and prolly took his manhood too.

But, all in all its a great party flick that'll have you and your friends laughing with plenty of "oh sh1t! lookit that!" scenes thrown in for good measure....

Just make sure you're at least know what you're in for and dont think about it so much. It aint like this is Shawshank Redeemption or anything. Just sit back and enjoy.

The Story of Ricky is one of the coolest movies of all time. It has been hailed as one of the goriest movies of all time. I must say that I really don't think of it as one of the goriest movies ever, but it truly is an awesome viewing experience.

There are many flaws in this movie. The story of Ricky turns out to be not much of a story at all, just an excuse to splatter some poor bastards. The sets are very cheap and generic, the splatter effects are very amateur, and the acting is horrendous.

But this movie makes up for all of this with it's pure fun. The way Ricky disembowels and destroys each of his enemies is a treat to watch. What the film makers lacked in effects they made up for with the sheer creativity of the violence. There are several ways people are disposed of that you've never seen before.

This is one of those strange movies where you can't really explain why you like it so much, you just do. You are just sort of drawn to it. While it was made in 1992, it somehow has that old school charm that movies like Drunken Master and Shaw Bros. give you. You just like it for some reason.

This film has become a cult classic, and rightfully so. The low budget splatter effects, laughable acting and funny situations will win you over. I call this movie a cross between the gore of Bad Taste with a Bruce Lee or Chuck Norris movie. If you are a fan of ultra violent gorehound movies and you don't really need Oscar worthy acting and great sets, then definitely check this one out.

This is simply a movie to sit down and enjoy the blood and guts and dismemberment. It's not Titanic...it's a movie where in the first few minutes a gut gets a two by four nailed to his face, complete with rubbery fake looking effects. That's what you like about this movie if you like it, however. All gorehounds, this one should be on your must have list of ultra violent movies. Well worth a look if you like these kind of flicks, which I myself do. Other similar recommendations: Bio Zombie, Bad Taste, Ichii the Killer( probably the sickest movie ever), Brain Dead, Street Fighter series, Fist of Fury.

NI do think of it as one of the goriest movies of all time - not that there's anything wrong with that. The wooden acting and laughable special effects make it not disturbing for one instant - but also make this no more than a ***1/2 film.Jeffrey Frawley

[Some] people who reviewed this film are way too uptight. "The plot is horrific, violence isn't what I thought it would be, extras just wave their arms around, blah blah blah".

Obviously someone forgot to mention to the "film critics" that this IS a kung fu/splatter/dark humor movie...And that it IS meant to be horrible and over the top to the point of laughter... I mean come on, a guy who ties his "broken sinews" back together with his teeth and fingers?? Or a guy who rips his own guts out to try and strangle another only to be defeated by one simple punch??

It's obvious this movie was meant to shock people, then ease the shock with a little comic relief via some fat stereotypical asian kid. I mean if you really want to take this movie seriously and complain about how weak the plot is or how fake the gore looks, then by all means go right ahead..

But seriously here, if you're the kind of person who likes to put on a DVD for a few friends so you can laugh and NEVER FORGET it... this one is definitely for you.

I mean, the infamous head explosion scene should be worth [the price of the DVD] alone...

It was one of those movies that kept me glued to the screen for no apparent reason when I was dead tired and sick. It is just so bad, so unbelievable it will crack you up and you have to tell a friend about "this lame ass movie I saw the other night." It doesn't contain that much gore (for someone who loves gore) but it is thrilling enough for gore seekers to laugh the whole 1 and 1/2 away.

Enjoyed and recommended! Just don't expect a real movie and it will delight you. I can watch it again.

Overall I was quite disappointed with this film. It's definitely lacking something, though I'm not sure what. Over here in the UK it's one of the few films released uncut, and a lot of the reviews of it stated it was gorier than Peter Jackson's Braindead. I'm not sure what version of either of these films the reviewers have seen but believe me it's not. Still if you're in a forgiving mood or drunk there's some entertainment to be had from it.

Story of Ricky is a pretty bad movie. There are so many plot holes in it that, after some time, I didn't bother with the story anymore (not that it's a good and original story anyway). The special effects are quite laughable (that's a good point in that case). In fact, the gore in this movie, even when it's badly done, is the only thing that made me watch it until the end without getting asleep. It reminded me a lot of Toxic Avenger, but done in Hong Kong.

This is the perfect movie for those who like gory Z-movies.

I don't think words can really describe this film... But try to picture this: in your average "Story of Ricky" fight scene, someone is decapitated, has their tongue cut off, is skinned alive or buried alive, explodes (not "fire" explodes, "air" explodes), has limbs cut off or blown up, and is punched through the face, stomach or chest at least once. And in one scene, towards the end when you think you've seen it all, someone actually transforms into a monster...? Okaaaaayyy.... Whoever made this movie was seriously on crack. It's funny if you're in the right mood, and it is truly one of the goriest films ever made (despite the fact that the "gore" is so poorly done). Invite some friends over, keep your thumb on the pause button, and have some throat lozenges handy for uncontrollable fits of laughter.

I watched the Story Of Ricky DVD last night, and I would recommend it - provided you've got a strong stomach. The basic premise is that Ricky goes to prison after taking revenge for his girlfriend's killing, and comes up against the corrupt wardens and bully inmates. This leads to some fighting, at which Ricky is a bit good.

The story isn't that interesting, or important, though some the characters are kind of cool (they're taken from a Japanese manga). What really makes the film stand out is the gore, which is completely over the top. If you've seen the anime/manga Fist Of The North Star you might have some idea what to expect - bodies are mashed by the power of Ricky's punch. The effects are pretty good - stomach turning stuff. The film is directed by Nam Nai Choi, whose films I generally like (Peacock King, Seventh Curse and um Erotic Ghost Story (not so hot)). It's basically an exercise in special effects, but it succeeds in bringing the manga to life.
