There are several movies which use "God of Gamblers" in their title. There are two schools of thought on how this series works. First of all, here's a timeline on how the movies fit together chronologically:

- God of Gamblers Returns (Action-Comedy Starring Chow Yun Fat, Chingmy Yau, Tony Leung) 1994
- God of Gamblers 3: The Early Stage (Action Starring Leon Lai, Anita Yuen Jordan Chan) 1996
Some people suggest that "God of Gamblers Return" and "God of Gamblers 3 - The Early Stage" are direct sequels to "God of Gamblers" and that "God of Gamblers II" and "God of Gamblers III - Back to Shanghai" are actually sequels to "All for the Winner," a spoof of the original God of Gamblers.
Other people disagree, arguing that "God of Gamblers Return" refers to "God of Gamblers II" and "God of Gamblers III - Back to Shanghai" and was actually a direct response to those films. As you can see, the second and third "God of Gamblers" films are classified as pure comedies, which alienates them from the other movies. Only two of the films feature Chow Yun Fat.
