"The Bodyguard From Beijing" (a.k.a. "The Defender") is quite entertaining, despite its lack of story depth, characterization, and the fact that it's pretty much a Hong Kong rehash of "The Bodyguard". The film's creative action sequences co-coordinated by Corey Yuen Kwai (who makes a cameo appearance in the mall scene) are a huge saving grace for "BFB". I have seen both the Hong Kong version and the American version by Dimension. My "review" will compare and contrast some of the diffences from both versions:
  1. The HK version has Chinese/English credits over a black screen. The US version has a new credit sequence in English.
  2. The HK version is scored by Wu Wai Lap. The US version is rescored by Nicholas Rivera(Rivera's music score is somewhat bland, yet effective.)
  3. The HK version contains Cantonese, Mandarin, and bits of English on its audio track. The US version is dubbed into English.
  4. The US version has some different sound effects not found in the HK version.
  5. Some Chinese names in the HK version have been replaced with Westernized names in the US version: Jet Li is called Hui Ching-Yang in the HK version and renamed John Chang in the US version. Kent Cheng portrays Leung Kam-po in the HK version and he's renamed Charlie Lau in the US version...
  6. When Leung meets Hui in the HK version, Leung attempts to say,"Comrade, how are you?" in Mandarin and Hui replies,"You can speak Cantonese." In the US version, Kent Cheng's looper stutters and announces his name in order to compensate for the English translaton.
  7. Some excessive violence has been trimmed in the US version(such as Jet Li getting shot and bleeding during the mock assassination in the prolouge or the man with a camera/gun falling back after getting shot in the lens and other brief bits of footage...)
  8. After the microwave explodes, Billy comments,"Hou-yeh(Cool!)" in the HK version. In the US version, Billy comments,"OH YEAH, BOY!" after the microwave explodes.
  9. After Hui(Jet Li) inspects Michelle Yeung's(Christy Chung) car, there's a shot of Ah Keung,Leung's partner, recieving a call on a cellphone. This shot is omitted in the US version.
  10. In the HK version, Hui makes Michelle cry when he lectures her about trying to evade his protection by attending a party that she is invited to. Michelle comments,"What are you looking at? I am not crying because of you[plu.]. Ah Keung is also in the scene. In the US version, Michelle comments,"You made me cry. It won't happen again."
  11. There is a scene where Billy and Leung Kam-po are sleeping in the same bed. Why was this scene omitted from the US version? It seems questionable.
  12. When Michelle is wooing Hui, a Cantopop song plays on the soundtrack. The Cantopop song is replaced with Nicholas Rivera's score in the US version.
  13. In the HK version, there is footage of Hui, Billy, Leung, and Ah Keung installing bullet-proof glass. In the US version, the footage is omitted, but the bullet-proof glass is still mentioned.
  14. Ah Keung is referred to Ken in the US version.
  15. During the climax, Hui turns on the TV when he's fighting assassins in a dark house. In the US version, stock music from Dimension's version of "Fist Of Legend" (composed and conducted by Steve Edwards) plays when Hui turns the TV on. In the HK version, the music coming from the TV is different.

The bottom of the picture where there used to be imbedded English and Chinese subtitles has been covered up by World Video with a black bar and new subtitles. While the new subtitles may be a welcome addition, many viewers will be annoyed by the fact that the bottom of the picture is covere up. Boo, World Video.
