| When police officer Cuba (Michael Wong) accidentally shoots his partner during a gun fight he is suspended. This doesn't stop him from investigating a serial killer who is murdering brothel customers, carving a cross into their tongues and castrating them. Cuba turns to one of his informants, Ben (Anthony Wong) a pimp, to help him catch the killer.
There are few surprises and very little excitement to be had from this lacklustre effort, even in the film's climax which is just about over by the time you realise you've got there. Its obvious from pretty early on who the killer is (it actually gives it away on the VCD cover) and there are no twists to keep the plot interesting. Quite why the movie is called violent cop is the only mystery as apart from accidentally hitting his partner in the opening scene Cuba doesn't shoot anybody. The film's also let down by moments when the story just becomes too corny. The scene where Cuba discovers the identity of the killer is particularly bad.
Anthony Wong's character provides the only moments of interest but even his presence isn't enough to save this. It says something when you become far more interested in the sub-plots (Anthony is having money troubles with the Triad) than the main story. |
