 | | | | Hideo Gosha put together an extraordinary cast in a thrilling tale of the yakuza. Tatsuya Nakadai's gang boss is as well crafted as the rest of his work, Tetsuro Tanba gives a strong performance, and Yoshio Harada one of the best performances from this early period of his career. I think Gosha had a deep suspicion of noble samurai and yakuza codes of conduct. Throughout his career, his heroes generally come to realize what beasts people are. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |

 | | | | I saw this in the theater years ago then in a revival showing (in a Gosha retrospective in L.A.) and on a bootleg tape (that was cropped.) Gosha is an incredible director and while this is complicated and long, it's in the vein of the Godfather Triology: literate, pulpy, evocative. Lots of atmosphere, good characters, action. Gosha does it all. ...I recommend the movie highly. All Gosha films are first rate. | | LOG IN TO COMMENT ON THIS REVIEW! |
