With this film being so rare it comes as no surprise that it has been transferred to disk from a VHS master. Consequently it suffers from many of the problems associated with that but its still not a bad transfer and Eastern Heroes have tried to make up for it with a good set of extras and a budget price.

The film has been given a full screen presentation so cropping is obviously an issue in some scenes. It doesn't damage the fighting too much though as most of the action takes place centre screen. I can't remember one fight where it was difficult to see what was happening.

The quality of the print is reasonable with a minimal amount of scratches and sparkle; nothing too distracting. The transfer has been quite successful with about as high a level of detail as you could expect. There were some noticeable pixellation and artefact problems; these seem more prominent in the darker lit scenes where there seems to be a grainy layer over the picture. The daylight scenes were much less affected.

It does seem that in some scenes there may have been problems with light exposure as the screen tends to go dark suddenly, when the camera angle changes, and then goes lighter again. I suspect that this is due to poor film making techniques rather than anything to do with the transfer.

There is a single Dolby Digital 2.0 English dubbed soundtrack provided which has a minimal amount of background hiss (you have to listen quite hard to hear it).

For a low priced disk there are a surprising amount of extras. First there is an interview with Leung Kar Yan taken from the 'Top Fighter' documentary which features a key scene from 'The Victim'. In this he talks about how he got his break into movies. Secondly there is a bonus fight scene with Wang Li Pang. This is not a deleted scene from 'My Life..' but is taken from a completely different film although I don't know which one. There is also promotional trailer which features of montage of highlights from the film set, strangely, to a grunge soundtrack. There is quite an interesting photo gallery which, rather than simply including stills from the film, features a collection of lobby cards. Finally there are biographies/filmographies for Wang Li Pang, Leung Kar Yan and director Wang Chung Kwong. Eastern Heroes have really gone out of their way to provide a nice set of extras.

The disk also features some nice animated menus.

Despite the obvious limitations of using a VHS master for a DVD transfer this is still a worthwhile disk for an excellent film at a very reasonable price.

Chapters: 12

Picture: Displayed in fullscreen only, this print was obviously mastered from an old VHS copy. However, detail is surprisingly good considering the age with the fight scenes coming off the worst, displaying a soft and grainy look that occassionally detracts from the action. Minimal damage is present throughout in the form of minor speckles and the brightness has the tendancy to adjust itself during certain moments which is extremely bizarre.

Sound: DD 2.0 English dub only which is perhaps the worst attibute for this disc.

Trailers: Just a promotional trailer for this film.

Talent Files: Biographies and Filmographies for Leung Kar Yan, Wan Li Pang and director Wang Chung Kwong.

Extras: These include a Leung Kar Yan interview (previously seen on the Eastern Heroes' Top Fighter documentary), a bonus Wan Li Pang fight scene (not from 'My Life's On The Line') and a picture gallery.
